Installation and FAQ

How do I install Office?

After purchase, you can install Office at www.office.com/myaccount. For more information, see the FAQ.

How do I know if my computer or device can run Office?

You can install Office on PCs running Windows 7 or higher, and Macs running Mac OS X 10.10 or higher. For more information, including requirements for tablets and smartphones, see www.office.com/information.

Is Internet access required for Office?

Internet access is required to install and activate all the latest releases of Office suites and all Office 365 subscription plans. For Office 365 plans, Internet access is also needed to manage your subscription account, for example to install Office on other PCs or Macs or to change billing options. Internet access is also required to access documents stored on OneDrive, unless you install the OneDrive desktop app. You should also connect to the Internet regularly to keep your version of Office up to date and benefit from automatic upgrades. If you do not connect to the Internet at least every 39 days, your applications will go into reduced functionality mode, which means that you can view or print your documents, but cannot edit the documents or create new ones. To reactivate your Office applications, reconnect to the Internet. You do not need to be connected to the Internet to use the Office applications, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, because the applications are fully installed on your computer.

Can I install the new Office on my Mac?

If you have an active Office 365 Home, Personal or University subscription, and Mac OS X 10.10 or higher, you can install Office 2016 for Mac from www.office.com/myaccount. If you have an older version of OS X, you will be able to install Office for Mac 2011 versions of the Office apps from www.office.com/myaccount. Publisher and Access applications are not available for Mac.

Can I get the new Office for Mac without Office 365?

Office 365 is the best way to get and experience Office 2016 for Mac. A one-time software purchase of Office 2016 for Mac will also be available later this year. Office for Mac 2011 is available for a one-time purchase now.

I am an existing Office 365 subscriber. How do I get Office 2016 for Mac?

If you have an active Office 365 Home, Personal or University subscription, and Mac OS X 10.10 or higher, you can install Office 2016 for Mac from www.office.com/myaccount. If you have an older version of OS X, you will be able to install Office for Mac 2011 versions of the Office apps from www.office.com/myaccount. Publisher and Access applications are not available for Mac.

What are Skype minutes?

You can use Skype minutes to call friends or family with or without a Skype account on their mobile phone or landline. Just dial from Skype and your friends and family can pick up on their phone. Each active Office 365 Home, Personal and University subscription is entitled to 60 minutes of Skype minutes per month, which can be used to make Skype calls to phones in over 60 countries/regions. Office 365 Home subscribers can share a subscription with up to four members of their household, and each person will get 60 Skype minutes per month. Your Skype minutes will be applied to a new or existing Skype account. Each month you will receive 60 Skype minutes. Your Skype allowance resets each month. Special, premium and non-geographic numbers cannot be called using Skype. Calls to mobiles are for select countries only. Skype minutes available in select countries, see www.office.com/information for details.

How much OneDrive storage do customers get?

Customers with an active Office 365 Personal subscription receive an additional 1TB of OneDrive storage. This additional storage is not available during trial periods. This additional 1TB of OneDrive storage is applied to the OneDrive account that is linked to the Microsoft account used to create the Office 365 subscription account.

Can people with another Office version open documents I create with Office 365 Home

Yes, a person with a previous version of Microsoft Office can easily open documents created with Office 365 Home applications. Office 2007, Office 2010, Office 365, or Office 2013 users can open documents created using the latest release of Office applications without any additional action. Customers using earlier versions of Office may need to download and install a compatibility pack.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromHad to buy to get Android version!I had the complete Office 2013 Suite already installed, but, after beta-testing the preview of the product for Android, for some reason, MS decided not to offer the free version to those with tablets larger than 10". So, I had to buy a subscription just to get the products on my tablet. While it works fine on the tablet (and actually has some nice features), installing Office 365 Home on my desktop was problematic, and required a lengthy tech support call to repair some glitches (short version -- remove Office 2013 before installing Office 365!)

Rated 4 out of5 by fromAt last a (relatively) cheap way to get MS Office.I bought this as a regular user of Office as I thought it was a fair price to pay for the software on an annual basis to be able to upgrade from Office 2003 (!).

Rated 4 out of5 by fromOffice 365I bought this as I have all my documents and recipes saved in Word. As a home user and retired person, I wish Microsoft would offer a Senior Discount as I am on a fixed budget and the yearly fee is a bit high for needing this product to open all my saved files.

Rated 2 out of5 by fromBuggy and should still be in beta testingI bought Office 365 for Mac a few weeks ago and chose the 2016 version, since it was no longer in beta testing. I have only used Word 2016 for Mac so far and I am very disappointed. I can't imagine why Microsoft would dare to claim this was ready to pass beta testing. I lost several hours of work this week because of the issues and had to call tech support twice for assistance (which they admitted they could not repair because the program needs updating by the developers).I'd say the most useful feature in Word is that the Format button still remains on the Word 2016 toolbar--it's no longer there on the PC Word 2013 version. Other niceties include the ability to be able to email a document directly from the document. That said, Word 2016 for Mac is buggy as all get-out and I am very close to ditching it and going back to Word 2011. Documents are often saved with zero bytes, pages in saved documents won't display, formatting changes when no button has been pressed, the dreaded spinning circle indicates the program is frozen, the document often magically "floats" to another page location right while I'm working on it, and it is impossible to save my track changes balloon preferences--they revert to the original every time I re-open a document.I don't want to believe that Microsoft is purposely leaving a shoddy product on the market simply because it's for Mac products and they'd love everyone to go back to PCs, but I also can't comprehend why they have released such a mediocre product. So I am left to believe that this is once again, Microsoft throwing Mac users a bone on the one hand and throwing garbage at them with the other, perhaps with intention. And yes, I've made liberal use of that smilie face in the upper right-hand corner to let Microsoft know my concerns and show them screenshots.I cannot recommend the 2016 version of Office 365 for Mac users at this time.
