Rated 5 out of5 by fromBest Tablet I've ever ownedI've had my Surface Pro 3 (i5) for about 4 months now and can honestly say it's taken the way I interact with my computing devices to a whole new level. For both work and pleasure the Surface Pro 3 ticks every box. One word to describe it would be Premium. Your getting the best that the tech world has to offer with the Surface. This thing goes from a casual tablet to a powerful laptop with one snap of the keyboard. Everything from surfing the web to creating business documents and presentations is done with absolute ease. The power and performance of the i5 model makes every app and process work perfectly. The kickstand is a godsend. Two of my family members have abandoned their iPad's in favour of using my Surface to watch movies, play games and surf the web. The ability to add a memory card is brilliant. I've doubled my onboard memory and will never need to worry about running out of drive space. The Surface Pro 3 represents the leading edge of how laptop and tablet technology should come together.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromFantastic Device!I bought this back in October 2014. I've had it for 5 months now and I love this beast just as much as the first day I received it if not more.Light, portable, powerful, versatile, extremely high build quality, amazing screen. Its everything I've ever wanted in a hybrid device. It takes everything I need to throw at it. My portable office and entertainment!

Rated 5 out of5 by fromReally powerful for its sizeOnly had a few days, but so far it has handled everything I have tried, including years old Windows applications. Light and easy to use. Everything very well integrated. User interface is more or less intuitive and the many settings, although some learning required to find them, are well presented. (the search function is *very* useful for finding configuration options)All in all, a very capable and easily portable device.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromReally fantastic for students!I bought the surface pro i3 64gb two weeks ago intending to use at university. As a biomed student I normally have to carry a mountain of paperwork around so I bought it as a digital replacement. It connects seamlessly to either my smartphone or the university wifi and allows me access to all my documents and workbooks online. The Onenote features are amazing for note taking, being able to just click the pen and immediately take notes makes it as seamless as a pen and paper. The handwriting detection is as good as a real pen and paper as the screen gives just the right amount of friction when you write. The device it's self is light, and feels like a sturdy, high quality product in the hand. The browsing experience is ok, however it's a bit finicky due to the lack of UI scaling in many browsers, making some smaller buttons difficult to push, this isn't Microsoft's fault but it's relevant none the less. The only real serious negative I have is the windows button on the device is horribly placed meaning I constantly knock it if I'm writing with the tablet in portrait mode. So Microsoft, please take note and send us an update to disable that button when the pen is in use.If you want a powerful tablet or ultra portable laptop for work or school, you really can't go far wrong with this.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromSP3 i5 128GB is great for businessA lot of people don't realise how capable this device is until they use one. The key for business is that you deliver this device to the correct business role and test it works with business applications (which it generally will). The real cost saving is not just it replaces all the devices you have with one device, but the fact the end users and IT, don't have to:1. Learn lots of different operating systems (Before you had a laptop, tablet and smart device)2. Carry all the different chargers3. License all the different devices4. Support, update & secure all the devices5. Remember which device had which version of that filePros1. Battery is good enough to work all day2. i5 performs really well, under some pressure, for example running 2 x 24" IPS screens Email, Visio, PowerPoint, 4x Excel, 4 x Word, 5 or so browser tabs, PDF's, couple of remote server sessions, calculator, notepad, etc3. It is lightweight for worldwide travellers, IT, Exec's, Sales, Marketing, Lecturers, Doctors, Students, staff moving from desk to desk demoing technology. Staff moving from Office to conference room4. Docking station is very good works well5. Support is great globally a lot of business can't say that6. It doesn't overheat7. One Note and Pen is outstanding8. Encrypt the hard drive with bitlocker - to secure your data if device fails, lost or stolen9. OneDrive to backup all those files, family photos, etc if the device fails, lost or stolenCons (Very little really)1. Their are some essential addon's you need to buy, mini display port adapter to enable connection to, monitors, projectors, etc (Although miracast over WiFi projection will catch on). Type Keyboard, Bluetooth mouse (Arc Bluetooth is good), docking station, sleeve and maybe a protect case. Oh and really picking a privacy screen.2. Windows 8.1 is great but a free full upgrade for surface users to 10 would be even better.3. Bluetooth Audio is sometimes a problem but nothing that won't be fixed via a software update. All in all this device is simply the best device I have bought, and I have bought and deployed 30 so far successfully in different roles, in different countries, with excellent end user feedback. For business mobile workforce it is essential with some hidden cost saving gems.Well done Microsoft a truly amazing business tool!

Rated 5 out of5 by fromIt really has replaced my laptop and tabletI got my Surface Pro 3 on launch day as a pre order and before writing a comprehensive review here I wanted to use the Surface as my primary computer for a period of time so I can correctly assess the product. I’m writing this on the Surface Pro 3 with the type cover right now.My background is in IT and I have experience with a lot of devices from lots of different manufacturers. I used to use a custom desktop PC, which is fine but it sure isn’t portable. Generally I don’t like laptops or notebook PC’s because often they leave a lot to be desired in reliability unless you’re spending a lot of money. The second problem is it seems difficult to find a laptop with a great display, besides the MacBook Pro Retina. Now onto the final device, the tablet. The iPad is a great product, but lacks so much for real productivity. There’s no USB, the display is pretty small and overall it is purely a tablet only device. As a professional I wanted something that has more.I have a Surface 2 which still serves for media consumption, but it was a half-way house to true mobility – in my opinion though it is a great tablet.I purchased a Surface Pro 2 and was very happy using it for most of the year. Then comes the Surface Pro 3 which is a truly awesome product. The hardware is simply fantastic; the thinness, the lightness, the premium feel and quality is truly amazing. The first thing that struck me is how much a perfect fit the display size is, the thinness and weight for such a powerful device that is essentially a laptop, tablet and your notebook all in one. Then you flick open the friction adjustable kick-stand to any angle and you realise how adaptable the Surface Pro 3 is.The display is really nice, it is a nice size – big enough to ‘see’ stuff and small enough to be portable. It is also a high quality, high res display that is similar to that of what Apple tout as a Retina display. I have not seen a better display in a portable device.Connectivity is good and although some people would prefer two USB ports, overall it has everything you would need. You can expand storage via the SD card slot too.The type cover that I’m using now is so much better than previous covers and fits nicely. The touchpad is still a little small but it’s certainly usable. The keys are great, if a bit noisy when typing fast. Backlighting is a massive plus. You’ll be wanting the cover if you’re using this to replace your laptop so make sure you factor that into the cost.Lap-ability doesn’t concern me too much, using any traditional notebook on the lap for a long time is not the best experience. The onscreen keyboard is pretty good for that use-case so I normally kick the kickstand right back and use on my lap that way.Performance for the i5 model is very good, I didn’t bother with i7 despite wanting one because the i5 is pretty much fast enough for almost everything I do. It certainly runs fast and I have no complaints here. I have Photoshop, Office, Visual Studio and a few other apps that I run daily and at no time have I felt that I needed any more performance. I don’t think you’ll go wrong with the i5 model. I also hear for the more casual user that the i3 is worth looking at though, so I wouldn’t be put off looking at that option if you are looking for the Pro 3 at the lower price point. The battery life is comparable to the iPad in Wi-Fi browsing but you’ll get less when running intensive apps. I guess I would like more battery life in a future model but I can get though a working day (8 hours) using e-mail and web. That’s enough for me. The charging is fairly quick and the new connector is a lot easier to connect.I also have the docking station and have been using the Surface Pro 3 as my main desktop PC and I have to say it works better than I expected and I will probably continue to use it as my main PC. The only reason I would want my high-end desktop is to run something very processor intensive.I haven’t used the pen an awful lot as most of my work is electronic, but the little I have used it for OneNote to replace a pen and paper pad I’ve been very impressed.I wanted to write mainly about the Surface Pro 3 hardware and less about Windows 8.1 as it’s the experience of the hardware that are notable here. However this device really changes the way you will see Windows 8.1. The touch optimised interface and cloud support in Windows 8.1 really shine on this device and make using Windows 8.1 a pretty nice experience. I have actually enjoyed using the modern and traditional desktop apps on the Surface Pro 3.I could talk for a long time about all the use-cases I’ve been rocking the Surface Pro 3, and how good x y z feature is but the real deal is did it replace my other devices?I have not picked up my iPad for months. The Surface 2 has largely been used for movies and some light browsing. My laptop was a HP EliteBook that I carried around for work and it’s now sat here gathering dust. I have no used it since getting the Surface Pro 2. The Surface Pro 3 changes everything again and basically means I have no need for a laptop anymore. You have to factor in the Surface Pro 3 is of very high build quality and justifies it’s high price with it’s very fast solid state storage (most laptops still use the old hard drives), great specifications and awesome display all combined in basically something that is super light and very portable. Finally what is it like for media, movies and consumption? Well, it’s pretty good – I have no issues with it. The display is not optimised for movies because of the 3:2 display but it’s better for documents and web pages (or real work) but it’s still very likable thanks to its high resolution. The front facing speakers are much improved over previous Surface devices and are perfect for most users. As the SP3 is a full PC you can run iTunes, Photoshop, Adobe CC, full MS Office or any other Windows applications you could install on your laptop or desktop PC. That makes the SP3 a very flexible and commendable device.TL;DR is that I really like the Surface Pro 3, it’s a truly useful product that has to be experienced to be appreciated. It may take some time to get used to it, but once you have you’ll never want to be without it. All I can say is I really like the product and would urge anyone to at least give it a try.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromThere is no portable computer I would rather ownWhen I got my Surface Pro 3, the very first thing I noticed was how light it is. I already knew that it was the thinnest and lightest Intel Core device on the market, but I didn't understand it until I held it. This device is impossibly light - even when you get it, you will be in disbelief.Surface Pro 3 features a full-sized USB 3 port, mini display port, microSD slot, charging port and standard headphone jack. It also has volume controls on the side, an incredible kickstand, and is designed for use with Surface Pro Type Cover, which acts as a fantastic keyboard and cover for the screen. It has connected standby, meaning that for the first four hours of sleep, you will receive notifications. The device wakes up in 2 seconds during this stage of sleep, which is very nice! After 4 hours, I believe the device hibernates. One of the most interesting features of the SP3, for me, is that you can click the end of the pen to open One Note. It feels really natural. When you want to write, you click your pen, and put pen to paper - only this time you are putting pen to Surface, and it works really well.Another feature of the pen is that you can double click the top button to take a screenshot, which you can then crop and add to your notes. An excerpt from a digital textbook, a website, it makes note-taking that much simpler. The whole device is a premium build, including the pen, and I think you will be very pleased when you see it.The pen tracks amazingly well, much better than the Wacom tech used in Surface Pro 2. The pen now tracks perfectly over the entire screen, even the corners. The screen is so thin that when you write, the ink appears exactly where the nib is. Partnered with palm block - allowing you to place your palm and forearm on the screen and write without interference, this allows for a fantastic, natural writing experience. In terms of places to store the pen, you have a few options. You do get a loop with the Type Cover Pro - which is an amazing keyboard and will get its own review - however I don't feel like the loop is a good solution. Pro 2 had a strong magnet to attach the pen to the device, and the Pro 3 pen does actually stick in a similar way, over the charging port, as long as you stick it upside down. It's alright to keep it there when you're sitting down and using the device, and you can also walk with it there. If you start shaking the device it will fall off, but I think you'll be surprised at how well it sticks. I find that for general storage, it's best to keep the pen in a case, such as the Booq Viper Hardcase 13 which is a perfect fit for this device. The aspect ratio also adds a lot to the writing experience. Microsoft tried to mimic a pad of paper with the 3:2 display, and it's great - I believe portrait is the better mode for writing notes now. Whilst you could use Surface Pro 2 in portrait mode, it didn't feel right as the screen would be too narrow. SP3 definitely feels good in portrait, but I still find myself using it more in landscape with the kickstand when not writing. The build of this device is fantastic. The same Magnesium style as the Pro 2, only this time it's silver. It's a strong and sturdy build, but be careful with the screen, like you should with all large tablets. The high-resolution 2160x1440 display is fantastic, and it's quite a large tablet, but I feel like this is the perfect size to provide a high quality laptop and tablet experience at the same time. Comparing it with my Pro 2, the screen is 40% larger but has 50% more pixels, so overall the display is sharper. Personally I like this size for a tablet, I feel like the 7-inch tablets are too small, and this is a nice size to hold and has plenty of screen space.Another thing worth talking about is the kickstand, which is incredible. The two angles with the Pro 2 were so good, I was amazed when Microsoft announced a full-friction kickstand for Pro 3. You can now choose any angle for the kickstand, from 22-150 degrees, so you can choose virtually any angle you need, greatly improving usability. The Type Cover Pro now also magnetically attaches to the screen, providing lift to the top edge of the keyboard to improve the typing experience, and this also greatly enhances stability on your lap.Battery life is a bit better than Pro 2, and it does depend on how you use it. Microsoft claims 9 hours of web browsing and it seems appropriate if you use IE. The charger is nice, and the brick is smaller than the one on the Pro 2 charger. You can still charge a device, such as your phone, through the USB port located on the power brick. The SP3 is quiet most of the time. When I'm browsing, there's no fan activity, and the only time I've heard the fan is when updating Windows. I haven't got around to using it for anything heavier yet, as I'm on my holidays from uni, but I expect the fan to come on with heavy workloads like it would with other devices. However, compared to other devices, this fan isn't very loud. The Surface Pro 3 comes in five configurations, which differ quite a bit in price. The entry-level model contains an i3, 64GB SSD and 4GB RAM. The main thing to watch out for with this model is storage, as 64GB isn't much, and that's not counting the space Windows takes up. You can use microSD cards to expand storage, but running software from SD cards is not optimal, as the SSD is far, far faster. The models go all the way up to an i7 with a 512GB SSD and 8GB RAM. Personally I purchased an i5, 256GB SSD with 8GB RAM and I am very happy with it. Microsoft do offer a student discount on this device, which is 10%, and saved me a little over £100.You will of course see performance differences going from i3 to i7 and they have price differences to reflect this - I feel like an i5 version is a good middle-ground, and I think a 128GB SSD is minimum for a laptop replacement really. This device is very different to a traditional laptop. Who is it aimed at? As a Physics student, I feel it fits me perfectly. The pen is amazing for doing all my math work in tablet mode, and I can make spreadsheets and use MATLAB with the keyboard on the desktop. For me, this is far easier than carrying notebooks, textbooks AND a laptop - it all adds up in weight and takes a lot of space. Now I just carry this, which weighs nothing and takes up very little space. So, why should you buy Surface Pro 3 instead of a laptop? There are plenty of laptops that will give you better gaming performance, but they are also bulky, loud and heavy. Surface is intended to encourage productivity. This isn't a gaming device. Sure, you can play some low-end games, but it's not really meant for that. It's supposed to be used to take notes in lectures, capture your thoughts in the night, be there to create word documents, play about in Photoshop, manipulate matrices in MATLAB, browse the web - it's supposed to condense your laptop and tablet into one amazing package, and if that's what you're looking for, there is no better device to take on that role, and there is no portable computer I would rather own.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromImpressive - Windows and a pad!I bought this as a potential replacement for my laptop. It works great - the only downside is that the screen is smaller compared to my old laptop and you can only just use it on the train propped on your knees if there is no table. However if the screen was bigger then that would be no good as it would then be too large to carry. Voice recognition is impressive - can't make my mind up about handwriting recognition - but I am now getting into OneNote and may be able to abandon paper notepads completely - one of my objectives!
