FAQ

How do I activate my Surface and sign up for a plan?

1. Follow the Setup process. When you get to the "Get Online" screen, choose "Wi-Fi". You'll set up Mobile Broadband AFTER you set up Wi-Fi.

2. Once your Wi-Fi setup is complete, click the "Network Connections" link to launch the AT&T AllAccess app, or you can just launch the AT&T AllAccess app by itself. Once you're in the app, just click the "Activate" link. That will take you to the AT&T website where you can set up a new data plan or associate your Surface to your existing AT&T data plan.

I'm going to travel to a different country; do I need to change any settings on my device?

Check with your mobile broadband operator to learn about international data plan options. You may also be able to purchase a prepaid SIM or mobile broadband data plan from a local operator upon arrival in the country you’re travelling to. If you do neither of these, then you may want to change some settings on your Surface. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap or click Settings. Tap or click the wireless network icon, and under Mobile broadband, tap or click the network you want to use. If Roam automatically is checked, be sure to clear it. Then tap or click Connect. You can also simply turn off mobile broadband, and only use a Wi-Fi connection when it is available.

Ratings and reviews

Rated 5 out of5 by fromIt has Miracast supportI took a chance on the new Surface 2. For my work flow, it is very important that I connect wirelessly to our boardroom display. We have an office tablet that supports WiDi, but I wanted my own for personal use as well. I had scoured reviews for information on wireless display support, but nothing confirmed it. I asked Microsoft support, and again no confirmation. However, I tried it this morning at work, and it works really well - a little lag, but not an issue for work use or content streaming. Overall, I am very happy with my new Surface 2 - it's a great balance for work and personal use.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromYahoo! Excellent Device!I just received my Surface Pro a couple of weeks ago. I can't believe all the things that it can do that I could not do on my Mac and IPad. Excellent screen and I can easily connect to my work and access everything I need to..... very simple. So far, any app. I needed was on the Windows Store. I just received my Type 2 keyboard and I love it.... although the Touchscreen is very good the keyboard allows me to do more work related items. Thank you Microsoft! Although I still use Apple devices I love my Surface Pro and Windows 8.1. This little puppy goes with me wherever I go......... Happy... Happy!

Rated 5 out of5 by fromGoodbye iPads, hello productivity.I parted with a fully loaded 128GB iPad and got a Surface 2 just two weeks ago...and I've never looked back. This is what tablets should have been all along. I've not been a Microsoft fan for much of the past 10 years but the Surface has sold me on their newer products...so much so that my iPhone is about to get replaced with a Nokia 1520. Keep up the great work Microsoft, I have a feeling you're finally back on the right track. Also, your Portland, Oregon store has some of the best staff I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromEasy, productive, affordable, and stylishThis surface tablet is very easy to set up and easy to use. I absolutely love the capabilities that it has to offer. My fiancé is trading in her iPad 4 asap for this also. As a college student, this makes carrying a huge laptop....... well ridiculous due to this light weight tablet. I also own an eBay store, the fact I can now send invoices from PayPal through Excel blows my mind and makes my life very simple!I suggest that you get the arc mouse for surface also, it makes the tablet experience into a computing experience. This thing is absolutely productive and will hopefully take the tech world by storm. I have yet to find a weakness, also I bought a 64 gig sd card, which you can ACTUALLY SAVE APPS ON, unlike Android or Apple products. This is my mew snappy fast laptop. It also came with unlimited Skype and a Whooping 200 gigs of Skydrive free.I do love the two position icky sand as well, it makes the computing experience simple and flexible.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromGreat tablet for all my online activitiesI bought it the day it was released, and it has become the device I use the most. It is bright, sleek, fast and responsive, and durable. I use it to read, to watch YouTube, social media, web browsing, and shopping online. I love the Microsoft account integration with my social apps, office, and SkyDrive. All on all, I give it 10 out of 10!

Rated 5 out of5 by fromThis is more than a toy, its a Productivity DeviceI didn’t need a new computer. I have a Lenovo T420 and that I really like, but I wanted something more portable to have around the house and to travel with.I originally purchased a discounted Surface Pro 1 at the Microsoft Store. I was convinced I needed the Pro even though I had a good friend who said I didn’t based upon my needs. I brought it home and instantly fell in love…except for the price, weight, and battery life. At the end of the day, it was super powerful, but not what I had in mind for something to carry around the house.I took it back and purchased a Surface 2 64 gig with a bundle that got me the Type Cover 2, touch cover 1, $25 Microsoft Store card, Microsoft Complete Care, and tablet sleeve. If you do your research, you know the specs of the machine.Pros-2 position kick stand is much better than the version 1-great screen!-Comes with an Office suite that actually works-IE 11 is a browser with few limitations compared to iOS and Android. You don’t need stupid Apps. The websites just work.-Both keyboards are a great addition-Battery life is very good-RT is compatible with Smart Card readers and DoD Common Access card PKI software.-Skydrive integration with 200 gig free for 2 yeas-MicroSD Card reader-Integration with Windows 8 PCsCons-Microsoft’s poor marketing and the biased reviews who try to tell people RT should run x86. Nobody complains that iOS doesn’t run full desktop software-Cost. This is a premium machine and you will pay for itThis tablet is really all I use anymore. The tipping point for me was the fact that my CaC card works with this machine. I can log into DoD email and other protected websites with my tablet. I can’t say the same for Android or iOS. This was the original reason I thought I needed the Pro. Turns out I don’t (although I want one….but for no particular reason)
