Ratings and reviews

Rated 3 out of5 by fromNot disappointed but not impressedThis was a leap of faith for me. I decided to try Windows 8.1 on my one year old laptop running Windows 7. I understood with the upgrade that except for personal files all my programs would be lost and would have to be re installed. That, I was OK with until those programs had issues installing. All of them were supposed to be Win 8 compatible? If I had it to do over I would have stayed with Windows 7. Nothing against Win 8.1 but don't bother upgrading. Just wait until you buy a new PC. Finding drivers, installing programs, working out kinks is just a lot of work for a upgrade over a OS (Win 7) that really was perfectly fine.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromWorks as it should. Very fast OSI did a full wipe on my OS drive after backing all my important things up and installed this OS fresh on a blank SDD. Installed in about 10 minutes and was ready to use in about 20 min after installing drivers. After enabling quick boot and other BIOS features, I am able to power on the computer and login in about 5-10 seconds (timed). Overall this is a great Operating system and in my opinion blows windows 7 away. YES, there is a learning curve and some getting used to the new layout, but its worth taking the time to learn something new. To the person who stated this is not a full install, it definitely is. The product description states if your coming from xp/vista, you need win 8 install than win 8.1 in order to install from there, unless your just going to do a clean install.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromMac Bootcamp user!Works great on my MacBook Pro (15 inch,Retina late 2013) . I needed to buy Windows for school because I am in a computer class at school. I Windows to run 3DS Max because it doesn't run on Mac OS X natively. The only problem that I had was with the resolution settings but I was able to fix it by getting the support I needed. Even though I use Mac OS X more this does the job when I need to use Windows because I don't want to buy another computer.

Rated 3 out of5 by fromRunning 8.1 as a Virtual Machine on a MacbookI downloaded this for school. The download is an exe file that links to a full image of 8.1. Technically, Windows should be listed as a system requirement for the download, unless there's a way to download the image via the command line that I'm not aware of.At any rate, I couldn't open the exe on my Mac, so I found a Windows machine, logged into my Microsoft account, downloaded the full image onto a USB (it gives you this option after you download,) and used the USB to install on my Mac. No problems there. I'm not a huge fan of Windows 8.1, but the student discount is nice and there are options for giving the interface a Windows 7 style in case you're like me and you just want a traditional Windows experience.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromWindows 8.1 ProI purchased the Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro for students @$69.99 and glad I did. First I entered my product ID on my other PC (W7) and downloaded the ISO and burned that to a USB. 30 minutes later I was installing the OS on my Main PC which I use for work (requires a lot of IE) and personal. after install I installed the updates and switched to the desktop mode. It is smoother, simpler and cleaner than my W7 and Linux systems. I even found out about the Microsoft home use program for office 2013 pro and got that for 10 bucks... an amazing deal. It works great with my sinology NAS too. so all in all, 79 bucks for a great OS and office products. I certainly will be upgrading my W7 PC in a couple of weeks too. Great Job Microsoft.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromDecent OS, will take time to adjust to new systemUnlike what MS will say if you call their customer support, this is the full version than can be installed onto a blank harddrive. To do a clean install, download and run the program that they send you the link to. Run it. There should be an option to either burn it to a dvd, or to create and .iso, among other things. If you click burn to DVD, just follow the simple instructions and you will have your disk to install onto you're blank harddrive. The OS will take time to get used to. Its fast, but a lot of advanced settings are now hidded behind several layers and take time to find.If you built your own computer and you have an .edu email, buy this version, not the system builder one. $70 is a whole lot better than $200 for the same exact product.
