Ratings and reviews

Rated 5 out of5 by fromIt does a tonGet the 4gb model for sure. I've had one since September 2015 and the thing is just awesome. Battery life can be a little sketchy ~5 hours.... Just get a usb battery pack and toss it in your bag. Don't expect to play intense games but can play many fun games from years back (i.e. Warcraft 3) and newer 2d and less intense games (i.e. Stardust valley). Runs web browsers and office like a champ, if you're A student seriously consider this product.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromThis is a work tabletI'm typically a power user, so I was surprised at just how much user I got out of the Surface 3. I purchased the 4 GB / 128 GB edition.First, the positives:Full Windows 10 with full Microsoft Office 2013 / 2016 - I can open and edit any work documents that I need to. I find myself using Windows Mail and Calendar over Outlook as they are better for the tablet experience, but I can flip back to full Outlook if I need to.OneNote with Surface Pen is awesome - I've almost completely done away with paper notes now. OneNote sits open on my screen at work, and it's only a click away on my Surface. Any notes I take are immediately synced to my work PC and are searchable and available later when I need them.Annotate PDFs with Drawboard PDF - again, sketch notes right over the top of PDFs during client meetings, save them to my OneDrive so they're available everywhere so I can refer to them later.Web browsing and other day-to-day tasks work fine. The less-than-positives:Battery life and charging - as others have said, the Battery life on this thing can be hard to predict. I usually only need to charge it overnight, but I only use the Surface off-and-on throughout the day - typically at meetings or on the couch at home. There have been some weird bugs with charging where the device will be plugged in overnight and still only be 70% full (or worse, totally dead) the next morning. They've fixed that somewhat with firmware releases, but it still happens from time to time. The good news is that you can charge the Surface 3 with an adequately powerful USB charger (certainly not ANY charger as the specs say). I have a pretty powerful USB battery pack (20000 mah) and I was able to charge my Surface 3 from about 15% to about 70% which got me a few more hours of use.Atom processor - this is no Core i5, I'll tell you that. If you're used to the snappy experience you would get on a modern Core i7 or Core i5, get ready to wait. It isn't terrible, but the Surface 3 certainly does chug a bit here or there where I'm not sure if it has registered my clicks or taps sometimes. Still, it's not like it is freezing constantly, just not as snappy as I would like. For the price point, I can't complain too much. The pen isn't a great mousing device. The "right click" button and eraser button are not configurable, which seems like an oversight if you ask me. You can't scroll with the pen by clicking and holding the right click button for example.Last, and this is more of a Windows 10 gripe, if you're listening to music while the Surface 3 is on battery, the thing will still go to sleep. Your only option is to change your power settings so that it doesn't automatically go to sleep. This does not seem to be the case for videos, only audio. It's super annoying because I would like to just set my Surface up on its kickstand, and use it as a media player sometimes. I don't care if the screen goes to sleep, but when the whole device goes to sleep, the music stops.Overall, I really like this device. It is not a desktop or laptop replacement - it is a tablet. It is not an iPad or Android tablet - the Windows App store is atrocious. But, if you need something simple and well suited for day-to-day reading, document editing, note taking, and web browsing - you've found your choice.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromGreat deal on saleA solid Windows device. I purchased the Surface 3 for light document editing on the road and to support Sketchbook for graphic design. I need to train myself on pen inputs and this device promises very good return on investment. I expect it to fare better than an iPad Mini 2 and keyboard. I purchased Ethernet and Display adapters for the road. Usually, display connections don’t work because an adapter is necessary. I also purchased a Surface 3 dock for home use. The Surface 3 was warm after 6 - 8 hours in its dock. However, I bought the Surface 3 because it was fanless, so this is expected. I also installed a 128GB micro SD card as the Windows Backup device. Windows updates went smoothly under Windows Defender (I added Malwarebytes Premium later.) I expect that an MS device will fare better than an OEM with updates. Recommended.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromCompact and UsefulI purchased my Surface 3 approximately 3 months ago. The only bad thing that I can say is the USB for charging is awkward to use . Design needs to be made better.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromPretty impressed so far!So far I am very happy with my Sufrace 3. I am not so sure about the battery life. It never seems to have a accurate reading. Seems like it could be better. Also this tablet needs the keyboard. You could use a Bluetooth keyboard but the Microsoft keyboard really completes this device. It is backlit which is a huge plus for me.I could not find the specs of the onboard storage anywhere on this site or elsewhere. Some websites said it had a EMMC drive and I was told by the salesperson at the MS store it had a SSD drive. There is a big difference between the two. I am happy to have confirmed from Microsoft that my Surface 3 has an SSD drive. Maybe some earlier models don't ? Not really sure why they don't spell it out like they do on the Surface Pro 4? I think if you are in the market for a Surface knowing it has a real Solid State Drive is very important. The screen on this tablet is stunning. Really nice screen and the speakers have pretty good sound as well. This is my first Surface and the build quality is impressive. Love the Magnesium frame and kickstand. The tablet is very lightweight but feels very solid in your hand. It is simply a beautiful device and I want to use it. The performance of the Intel Atom X7 seems really good so far. I am not a gamer and just do basic tasks like office, internet, writing, etc. and I feel that the speed of everything is good. I do not feel the device is sluggish or slow.I know there are faster models with core processors but I hate fan cooled cpu's because you can't block the fan or fry the device. My laptop has a fast processor but the fan is always going and using it on my lap is not really practical. I wanted a device I could get work done but was truly portable. I like being able to use the Surface as a tablet when I want and adding the keyboard when I want to get work done. Sometimes the back gets warm but it is not too bad. I think unless you are trying to do something graphics intensive this device is really good. All of the fanless processors will throttle if pushed too hard. The Core M on the pro was very tempting but it cost almost double the S3 and for what I do with this machine I could not justify the extra cost. I have seen some other devices with a core m with a similar design of the Surface for less money than the pro or about what I paid for the S3 and keyboard but they do not have a backlit keyboard and some pair the keyboard with Bluetooth which kills the functionality. So overall the great screen, excellent build quality, fast atom x7, ssd storage, and good stable windows 10 software make the Surface 3 an excellent device. It may cost a little more than the competition but it really is a unique product that has all the features you want.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromThe Surface Is GreatI bought this at Best Buy and it runs flawlessly. But there is one Question why does it not come with the pen?
Date published: 2016-05-04
Rated 5 out of5 by fromFantastic DeviceI traded in an old laptop for this the Surface 3 (124GB of disk space and 4GB RAM) and I found it to be one of the best purchases I have ever made. I have installed Visual Studio 2015 Professional on it for work and I'm able to write and build code with no problems. Larger projects might take a little longer to build on the Atom processor, however it works and I am able to step through my code easily. I also do a lot of art on my Surface 3 and the Surface Pen is ideal for it. Each line is controlled by the pressure I put on the screen with the pen, its incredibly responsive.Pros:Fantastic battery life - It'll usually last me a good 10 hours or more. Some times as low as 9 with heavy internet use (like Remote Desktop through a VPN).Device is light and every well built - It feels nice to hold and I don't feel like I need be extremely gentle with it.Relatively fast for an Intel Atom processor - Apps launch within seconds, even larger apps like office or Visual Studio.Powered by Windows 10 - With the power of a full desktop class operating system on it, it can run anything you throw at it.The pen is super responsive - I do a lot of artwork on my Surface 3 and the pen is super responsive in art apps like Autodesk SketchBook. You can also choose whether or not you use the pen with your left or right hand, being a lefty that's definitely a plus!Expandable memory via SD Card - not much more I can say about this point. :)Cons:Occasionally has an issue where it won't wake from sleep. A simple power cycle fixes this.Does not play games very well - if you're looking for gaming performance you may want to go with the Pro. This can play games but not very well. It will do basic 2D graphical games okay (like Minecraft, Starbound, 1001 Spikes, etc), but avoid 3D games like Skyrim or Fallout 4 on it.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromGreat for studentsI bought the surface 3 eight months ago as an alternative to my much larger laptop, so that I could have something more lightweight and portable to take to class. I never imagined that it would replace my laptop, but that's essentially what has happened. Since I'm a science major and much of my time is spent on powerpoint, excel and word. The surface 3 gives you more than enough power to run a few programs at once and screen is big enough so that you aren't straining to see what your'e looking at. The ability to annotate powerpoint presentations and other office documents during class, or use onenote to take notes, and downloading textbooks has significantly cut down on how much stuff I need to have with me on a daily basis, and everything is at your fingertips for review. On an average school day I use the surface for about 8 hours in office programs and usually have enough battery to where I don't need to plug it in to charge. The only problems I have had with the surface 3 are minimal and include issues with connecting to and finding wifi networks, occasional onenote or office crashes and the occasional black screen on startup requiring a hard restart. Other than those minor issues I have no complaints. If you are a college student looking for a lightweight, portable laptop alternative you should seriously consider the surface 3 with the type cover and pen, you won't regret it.
