Ratings and reviews

Rated 5 out of5 by fromFantastic DeviceI traded in an old laptop for this the Surface 3 (124GB of disk space and 4GB RAM) and I found it to be one of the best purchases I have ever made. I have installed Visual Studio 2015 Professional on it for work and I'm able to write and build code with no problems. Larger projects might take a little longer to build on the Atom processor, however it works and I am able to step through my code easily. I also do a lot of art on my Surface 3 and the Surface Pen is ideal for it. Each line is controlled by the pressure I put on the screen with the pen, its incredibly responsive.Pros:Fantastic battery life - It'll usually last me a good 10 hours or more. Some times as low as 9 with heavy internet use (like Remote Desktop through a VPN).Device is light and every well built - It feels nice to hold and I don't feel like I need be extremely gentle with it.Relatively fast for an Intel Atom processor - Apps launch within seconds, even larger apps like office or Visual Studio.Powered by Windows 10 - With the power of a full desktop class operating system on it, it can run anything you throw at it.The pen is super responsive - I do a lot of artwork on my Surface 3 and the pen is super responsive in art apps like Autodesk SketchBook. You can also choose whether or not you use the pen with your left or right hand, being a lefty that's definitely a plus!Expandable memory via SD Card - not much more I can say about this point. :)Cons:Occasionally has an issue where it won't wake from sleep. A simple power cycle fixes this.Does not play games very well - if you're looking for gaming performance you may want to go with the Pro. This can play games but not very well. It will do basic 2D graphical games okay (like Minecraft, Starbound, 1001 Spikes, etc), but avoid 3D games like Skyrim or Fallout 4 on it.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromGreat for studentsI bought the surface 3 eight months ago as an alternative to my much larger laptop, so that I could have something more lightweight and portable to take to class. I never imagined that it would replace my laptop, but that's essentially what has happened. Since I'm a science major and much of my time is spent on powerpoint, excel and word. The surface 3 gives you more than enough power to run a few programs at once and screen is big enough so that you aren't straining to see what your'e looking at. The ability to annotate powerpoint presentations and other office documents during class, or use onenote to take notes, and downloading textbooks has significantly cut down on how much stuff I need to have with me on a daily basis, and everything is at your fingertips for review. On an average school day I use the surface for about 8 hours in office programs and usually have enough battery to where I don't need to plug it in to charge. The only problems I have had with the surface 3 are minimal and include issues with connecting to and finding wifi networks, occasional onenote or office crashes and the occasional black screen on startup requiring a hard restart. Other than those minor issues I have no complaints. If you are a college student looking for a lightweight, portable laptop alternative you should seriously consider the surface 3 with the type cover and pen, you won't regret it.

Rated 5 out of5 by from4GB/128 LTE Model FantasticI purchased the Surface 3 4GB/128 LTE model on 2/12/16. Since that date I have used this tablet continuously both for work and personal use. I work as a Field Supervisor for a public transportation service in a major metropolitan city here in the USA. I investigate complaints from drivers and from passengers, and also investigate vehicle accidents our busses may be involved in. I can take this tablet with it's 4GLTE (T-Mobile network) use the Surface pen to fill out any accident forms at the scene verify the information is correct, take photos of the scene upload all to One Drive, go back to the office, open One Drive and just print out the forms. Before this I used to take notes with ink on paper, take photos with my cell phone, go back to the office, pull the pics off my cell phone with a USB cable, try to read my notes written under pressure at the scene of an accident, fill out the forms on the computer then print everything. For personal use I can write notes, draw pictures for my kids, take photos of my kids and either print them out from one drive or any thing else. Yes, it will not replace a 15" laptop with all the ports, SSDs, etc. but it will replace the weight. All in all a very quality product at a very attractive price.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromVery Satisfied But..(I start with why I am satisfied and only get to the one issue toward the end)I got this laptop/tablet a few weeks ago along with a Surface Pen. Overall, I am VERY satisfied. It feels responsive, fast, and works wonderfully. I mainly use this tablet to take notes for school and brainstorm ideas for my personal projects; both using OneNote. Occasionally, I browse the internet, using YouTube among other websites. I have used some of the other Office programs and I only have one complaint. I want to use the pen as a mouse instead of using it for drawing. This problem IS being addressed.Problem:As for the tablet, I have a single problem with it that's keeping me from giving 5 stars. I do not know whether I should blame the pen or tablet but occasionally, the pen stops responding. The pen is working but for some reason, the tablet is not detecting the point so I cannot use the pen at all. This can be really frustrating. Even when I restart the tablet, the pen usually tends to stay undetected. So far, I have been fixing this by taking the battery out and putting it back (the same battery). This solution has worked so far but it feels really unnecessary. I should not have to take the battery out of the pen for the Surface to detect it.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromLet me make this review simple for you guys.A lot of analysis is not really needed for the Surface 3. I will break it down in simple terms to help you make your decision.First, this is much more usable solution as a tablet than the Surface Pro 3. Let me make that clear right away. The smaller and lighter size is a BIG deal. You need to look at this as a tablet on steroids and the SP3 as a bonafide laptop with some tablet function. The Surface 3 is meant for those who want to do casual browsing, light gaming (app based mostly), check emails and Office etc. For those people this will work flawlessly. This is NOT a full fledged laptop. It is NOT a laptop replacement for a PRIMARY laptop but rather it can be your SECONDARY laptop if you have a large screen, powerful laptop at home and need this for casual usage while the big ones stores your media and does higher graphic and CPU intensive work like video editing etc.If you are looking for a pure tablet experience you will be disappointed because Windows app store is not up to par with Android and iOS and all the desktop applications in the world cannot substitute for pure TOUCH based apps that are plg and play, not some website that you have to navigate with little fingers on the desktop side (like Showtime, Starz etc)You need to look at this as a VERY powerful and versatile tablet that can perform all the functions of a laptop and provide somewhat meaningful tablet experience. The iPads and Samsungs of the world have nothing on this one.The processor with the 4GB/128GB is FINE for anything on a normal and casual usage. It flies around videos and web browsing and the 3:2 format is EXCELLENT for those that like to read a lot on the web. (like me).The Stylus pen has no equal for top notch handwriting experience. The keyboard is surprisingly usable when it comes to switch to laptop mode. Now the NEGATIVE for the loss of a Star -The charging on this is grossly mismanaged. It should have gotten a micro USB 3.0 to enable faster charging (like the Note 3) and for faster file exchange. That would still allow the micro USB to work since it is dual type portThe charging takes a) too long b) LOSES incremental charge when being used and plugged c) charges too slowly with standard less powerful adapters out there for phones and tablets.So...the biggest plus of using "any micro adapter" is misleading. Yes, it will work, but slooowly especially when being used while charging. The battery life for normal use is 5-6 hours which is acceptable as a laptop and the fact that you can hook up a standard powerbank to keep working in the field. This is an excellent device for -STUDENTS --One Note with hand writing is TREMENDOUS for today's generations for recording lectures and notations and on and onFIELD WORKERS - real estate, construction etc for quick entry and signing off and filling pdfs etcMOBILE PROFESSIONALS - those who want a small form factor tablet/laptop alternative to traditional ipad+keyboard solutions and don't play much games etc.NOT FOR -Those looking for a primary laptop (unless you have a desktop for regular use)Like to use laptops for video and photo editing beyond casual useHeavy gamersTablet seeking people who want apps for everything...their bank, wrist watch etc etc.Hope this helps.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromGreat DeviceA left handed stylus user.I picked up the Surface 3 64GB model about two weeks ago with Windows 10 pre-installed, and with the Surface 3 keyboard on black Friday. I have mainly used it to surf the internet, work with office documents, school, and light video streaming. These were the main reasons I purchased the Surface 3. It performs well for me. I also purchased the Microsoft screen protector and the new surface pen, because it came with replacement tips (not the original Surface 3 pen). I use OneNote a lot. this is the first time I've tried using a stylus with OneNote. I'm a heavy note taker, and I love how OneNote works with the pen. I'm left handed, and it works well for me. The Microsoft screen protector I installed does not interfere with touch, or use of the stylus. it's as if the screen protector was not even there.Since this is a 64GB model, and I'm a OneDrive user, I'm not worried about running out of space on the hard drive. I've even configured my personal folders (documents, downloads, music, and pictures) to be automatically stored on a 32GB micro SD card. This was the perfect model of the Surface family for me. The one thing I'd recommend to anyone making the move for a Surface, is to take the time to set it up right (all the features of a tablet/ stylus etc...). I did, and have no complaints. I'm even satisfied with battery life, as it is good enough for me.I purchased this model, for size, portability, and because it had enough processing power for me.Overall, I'm very satisfied with the Surface 3, stylus, and Surface 3 keyboard.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromLove the great features of my Surface 3 LTE 128GBI bought this a few weeks ago and I love it. It is light and it has all of the conveniences of a tablet with the power of a laptop with the typecover. What is really great is the surface pen which has a very real and smooth writing experience.
