Ratings and reviews

Rated 5 out of5 by fromGreat OSI love this software! I bought one copy for my sister, that she uses on her Mac to draw with classic Microsoft Paint and the new Modern UI Fresh Paint. As for myself, I was going to hold out until Windows 10, but when I heard about all Windows 8.1 Update users getting Windows 10 for free, I couldn't hold back. I regularly use Windows 10 Pro Insider Technical Preview build 10130 just to see the new features, and I can't wait to see that dream become a reality. I mean, seriously, Continuum, integration with Windows, iOS, and Android phones, a new browser that supports extensions, and even an Xbox app! But in the meantime, Windows 8.1 Pro is pretty cool.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromBumpy start excellent follow throughMy issues with Windows 8 boiled down to a Asus Wireless N card. It turned out the Wireless card was junk and Asus couldn't be bothered to make a decent driver for it. Once I pulled the card Windows 8 has been fantastic. I have a Mac and my custom built PC and I feel like in many ways Windows 8 is better then OS X Yosemite. The only thing Microsoft isn' doing is bundling Office with Windows. For sake of keeping this from being a super long winded review I'll go over the things I like over Windows 7.The task manager is way more detailed. The start bar is displayed on each screen. You can set the start bars to only show the icon of the program when the program is on that screen. The dialog windows are more detailed. The lock screen is very interesting to look at. The setting of the computer are saved to your account online so new computers or reemerged computers get their settings as soon as they connect so no more setting up each machine overtime windows is installed. This came in very handy when I switched to a SSD drive for my boot drive.Things I don't like or confused me at firstI kind of miss aero. I'm getting used to it being gone but I'd the option of having it again. Not a big deal but a first impression. I would not trade the features of windows 8 to get it back though by going to window 7.The start screen takes a little while to get used to until you realize you can click the start key on your keyboard and type the name of the program you are looking for and it brings it right up and enter opens it. So it's like a full screen start menu with interesting tiles you can pin to the front of it.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromBest windows operating system yet by farWindows 8.1 is by far the best operating system yet. I see a lot of bad reviews out there but it takes a little while to learn how to use. Give it a little time and be sure your not installing this on a older computer and expecting it to transform your old computer into a super computer it does not work like that. Be sure you have at least the minimum requirements before you install windows 8.1 on a older computer and it may well be worth it to make any upgrades to your computer that may be necessary before installing windows 8.1. I give this windows operating system a thumbs up for sure.

Rated 1 out of5 by from8.1 Pro...I don't like 8/8.1! I would rather stick with 7 or upgrade to 10!! I don't like having 2 different versions smashed into 1 OS, too many settings and too complicated...especially for even the basic users. I wouldn't recommend getting this unless u have 2!!!!

Rated 3 out of5 by fromWindows 8.1Nice features and changes. Vulnerable to crashes when downloading Windows updates. (It has happened to me twice) High rate of update failure because one update will fail 33 others. This leads to remote login failures because most servers will deny login if current updates are not installed. Will Windows 10 have the same difficulties.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromNiceI really don't have any complaints about Win 8.1. It took some getting used to, but now that the learning curve is over, I have decided that I really like it. Might be their best so far.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromI really enjoy Windows 8.1I've been using it ever since the "release preview". It's basically a more refined, better looking, faster version of Windows 7.I even prefer the Windows 8 start screen. I'm also "tech intermediate" so that probably doesn't hurt. I think many people complaining about the OS and the new design/features are borderline tech illiterate. I've heard very few valid criticisms of the product.
