FAQs

Q: What sensors does Microsoft Band 2 have?

A: Microsoft Band 2 has sensors that help you track info about your activity level, UV exposure, location, heart rate, elevation, and more.

Continuous heart rate monitor
Your Microsoft Band 2 continuously monitors your heart rate during the day. See Track your heart rate for more info.

Accelerometer/Gyrometer
The accelerometer/gyrometer in your band detects motion. This info is used to calculate things like number of steps taken. For info on tracking these measurements, see track your calories burned, track your exercise, track your steps, and track your sleep.

GPS
When you turn GPS on during distance travel activities like running, hiking, or biking, it records your route, and collects info about the distance you’ve traveled. Sync your band with your phone, and you’ll find a map of your route in the Microsoft Health app. Use the Run Tile to start and stop GPS tracking for running, and the Bike tile when you ride. See using GPS mapping for more information.

Microphone
The microphone is near the left side of the touchscreen.

Ambient Light Sensor
Info from the ambient light sensor can be used to adjust the brightness of your touchscreen display automatically.

Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) sensors
The GSR sensor measures the conductivity of your skin between the GSR sensor under the clasp and the secondary GSR contact point under the face of your Microsoft Band 2. This tells your Microsoft Band 2 whether you’re wearing it, so it can adjust how it monitors your activities.

UV Monitor
Get a snapshot of the current UV level by tapping the UV Tile, so you can decide if you need sunscreen, a hat, or maybe a few hours indoors.

Barometer
Track your fitness with more precision with a built-in barometer that measures elevation changes while running, biking, or just climbing stairs.

Q: What is auto sleep tracking?

A: You can use Microsoft Band 2 to track how much and how well you’re sleeping.

Microsoft Band 2 tracks the length and quality of your sleep using biometric data like heart rate and motion. The Microsoft Health app and your Microsoft Health web dashboard use data collected by the band to calculate and help you analyze your sleep quality.

Q: What are Guided Workouts, and how do I know which is right for me?

A: Guided Workouts are workout routines you download to your Microsoft Band 2. Your Band will tell you what exercise to do, and can track your reps and calories burned. They keep your workouts fresh and challenging with targeted workout plans designed by top fitness brands.

Choose a guided workout plan based on your fitness goals. Select the difficulty level, duration, and the focus area that’s right for you, and get a summary of your effort and progress towards your goal.

Guided workout videos show you how to do your exercises for maximum fitness benefit.

Ratings and reviews

Rated 1 out of5 by from5 minus 4 starsThis is my second review. see the first titled 5 minus 1 star. There is a lot of good about the band (and the new Lumia 950XL) that I have recently purchased. HOWEVER.... the Bluetooth connectivity is poor at best between the phone and the band on this new phone. It was PERFECT on my old Lumia 920. (WP8.1). Despite the fact the band is a great product, it isn't doing what Microsoft claims it will regarding Bluetooth and Cortana. I suggest waiting to make a purchase until the connectivity issues are rectified. I will be happy to change my purchase recommendation once the issues are resolved.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromGreat fitness tracker and smart watchI am impressed with the capabilities of this device as both a fitness tracker AND a smart watch. Getting notifications from my phone means I look at my phone a lot less throughout the day. In terms of fitness, I have been very happy with the device. Tracks steps, calories, heart rate, sleep patterns and more.Guided workouts are a really nice feature but 1 at a time seems like a strange limit to me. Would like to see this functionality improved.I do wish there was an easy way to enter the exercises I do without the Band (eg. swimming). It would also be really nice if I could delete email from the Band.Overall, great device and would definitely recommend. I am looking forward to more updates that hopefully enable more functionality.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromgreat deviceI will say that I really like my band 2 and the only reason that I didn't give it a 5 star rating is because the Health Software needs work. You really need to be able to add other exercise such as swimming to it. I swim several times a week and can't record any of those work outs. Definitely not a full picture of what I do. I understand that the band is not water proof and I an OK with that, just the Health Software should allow a user to enter other exercises besides the ones that they have listed. As well, way to much focus on golf and not enough on general fitness. So the Band 2 itself is excellent and I love it, the MS health Software which is also part of the experience is poor at this point.

Rated 2 out of5 by fromNot for data geeksGreat design; poorly executed. This is my first fitness tracker, and the technology is why I chose this over the sea of competitors. I can live with charging it every 24-36hrs, but the GPS is a deal breaker. On a full charge, it dies within 3.5hrs of tracking my bike rides. It's winter now, summer rides sometimes exceed 5hrs, so there is no chance it will record those. And as far as the golf app/tile is concerned, when was the last time a round of golf was completed in 3.5hrs or less? Never, that's when. It seems to be great at tracking steps, heart rate, calories, etc. Notifications are convenient, for sure, and my iPhone app works flawlessly with it too. So close to perfect for me, but I think I'll be returning it due to the poor GPS performance.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromWorks as expected, lots of customization featuresI did a lot of research prior to receiving so I'd be ready to leverage all the capabilities and well built product, the Band 2 info pages are excellently detailed with examples on how to build to your needs - especially having the VIP list for emails.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromGreat fit, worth the upgradeI had an original band for the last year which feature-wise was great (with my Lumia) but was uncomfortable, especially for sleep tracking. This new Band 2 is amazingly comfortable. I am also loving the new features, such as pausing the sleep rather than cancelling it for those 3am wake-up-and-check-my-calendar moments. Price tag is a little hefty compared to the original, but I'm more than happy. WAY more.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromA LOT of potential Cortana makes it or breaks it!Ok, lets get the bad out of the way. It's very short list but an Integral function that is needed:I got the Band 2 working without issue on my 640XL W8M phone. Then for no reason Cortana stopped working to answer my Text by dictation causing me to have to reset the Band to factory and the Health app had to be deleted from the phone and set up from scratch to get it working again. There is a LOT of threads about Cortana stopping working while the rest of the notifications are working fine? What gives with this. This cost me a LOT to time guys to fix and research online. Which really did NOT help the W10M people as I can only say that I had this fixed on my phone which is NOT a 10 device. There are a lot of people pointing to W10M as the possibly culprit, and I do not think this may be right as I had the same issue on 8.You should add the ability to be able to rely to emails in the same manner as Text that would be a GREAT addition. And seems to me not to be very hard to add. If you can use Cortana to reply to text - why not emails? When Cortana is working this gets a 5 star, without it - really it's a 1 or 2 star. I was nice to give you a four, but I was able to fix the error. Fix this and you have a winner. The Good:The Starbucks App is AWESOME. Love the wrist fit and the clock rotation function. The AP app is a good one too. Twitter and Mail notification and the caller ID works great. Activity tracker is great too and the ability to customize the App from the Health App on the phone is working great.I am using it more that I thought I would, and if I did not want it to work, I would be throwing it back at you - but once you have it for a week, you will not want to get rid of it.Fix the Cortana thing and you have a product that has a LOT of potential.Jared
