Rated 5 out of5 by fromMy 950xl on loanMicrosoft has recently lent me a Lumia 950xl for review. I appreciate being able to use this loan unit but this has not influenced my opinion of the device or Microsoft. This is my personal view and no 3rd party has influenced me on my opinions. The first thing that I liked was the removable battery and the ability to add micro SD storage, having read some other reviews about it not feeling premium I did not find this an issue and actually found it very comfortable and light to hold. We did the software update and to be honest this did take quite some time, e.g. overnight! However, we don’t think this was our WI-FI as other pc’s were working normally.Once it was up and running the first thing that struck was the quality of the screen and knocks spots of my HTC M9. The colours are very vivid and the brightness was right for me. There were no dead pixels. Camera quality is fantastic and the pictures taken were some of the best I have taken on a phone, I also love the dedicated camera button and the fact even when the phone is in lock mode the camera will launch by pressing it. The screen quality for video playback and games was awesome. The only downside for me was the sound output through the speakers was a bit top end sounding for me and not as good as other devices I have used which does hinder the overall enjoyment when watching movies / playing games etc., however using headphones the quality is great.I have never used a windows phone before and I have to say I really enjoyed windows 10 mobile and especially live tiles. The personalisation features are great and you can really make the phone your own! I found the operating very smooth and quick and simple to get used to given the resemblance, there were a few crashes initially which needed a reset but these stopped after a day’s use. I am aware of new features available on the insider builds and the anniversary update coming soon which sound awesome.Cortana? I love her. this personal assistant knocks spots of the others, after learning my voice commands were met with efficiency. In relation to windows hello I did set this up and this worked relatively well, although not so well in places with lower light levels. The app gap didn’t really cause me any major concern as most of the android apps I use were available or I could simply use the web for others such as you tube, although I did find a great you tube app, “awesome tube” I used the phone all day and didn’t experience the battery drainage issue I have read on some other reviews.I used continuum via a wireless adapter and was very impressed with this feature, again I was able to use this as a substitute to my laptop for simple tasks, browsing and office work etc., I can see this really growing in the future.Synchronisation between devices is flawless, notifications, from phone, pc, windows tablet all sync perfectly, even changing your desktop background on 1 can sync to all, I used one drive for the first time and this is excellent again working across all devicesThe spec and power on the Lumia 950xl is fantastic which enables it to handle everything thrown at it. In some eyes the Lumia 950xl may not be a looker compared to maybe to the galaxy s7 or iPhone but for me it does feel premium and looks it, one thing that was obvious is that the software does need some tweaks which I know MS work on each week, but my android also has these minor issues, one thing that smacks out with this phone is the innovation! Especially with continuum and hello and Cortana!I am due an upgrade from my HTC M9 I have been on Android since the galaxy s3 would I consider a Lumia 950xl or 950? No I don’t need to consider I am getting one!

Rated 4 out of5 by fromGreat hardware - needs more supportMicrosoft has recently lent me a 950XL for review. I appreciate being able to use this loan unit but that has not influenced my opinion of the device or of Microsoft – this is my personal view and no 3rd party has influence directly or indirectly on my opinions. The 950XL is definitely a great piece of hardware, the screen is beautiful, it's fast and the camera is fantastic. It certainly matches up to my Nexus 6P in all of those regards, but it is not without it's faults. Aesthetically I prefer the Nexus 6P, the 950XL doesn't look bad, but it isn't a stunning device either, the matte black plastic body does really do anything to make it look like a premium device. When there are Android flagships, and iPhones with all metal bodies it seems kinda unfortunate that the best Windows 10 Mobile device today uses black plastic. Having a removable battery and a microSD slot on a high end device is certainly something to be welcomed though, the 950, 950XL and LG G5 are the only high end phones I can think of with both. For some people the 5.7" display might be cumbersome, but coming from the Nexus 6P with the same size display, I had no issues. The 950XL is actually a little shorter. When I first turned the device on, I had to immediately do some fairly large updates and seemingly every app wanted to download an update too, this isn't really anything to be surprised by, but the store choked up whilst doing this and it took much longer than it seemed it should of. Regardless I eventually got the device setup. First impressions of Windows 10 Mobile were positive, I am used to Windows 10 on the desktop and my Surface Pro 3 already. It performed well with few hiccups. I installed Spotify, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp and they all behaved as expected. Two omissions that mattered to me the most were Snapchat and Authy. I could certainly move away from Authy and this wouldn't be so bad, I probably would if it was my device. Snapchat is harder to move from as it would require convincing everyone else to move too, something I don't think I could do. I could find an alternative version of the KeePass password manager that worked well, though missed the custom KeePass keyboard I can get on Android, and the notification allowing for username and password to be copied. I also would like to see official Google apps support, whilst the built in email client is good, not having Inbox was annoying, I really like the UX in Inbox.Windows Hello worked well, I think that iris recognition is a little less convienient than the fingerprint scanner on my Nexus 6P as you have to hold it in front of you. Hello was however fast, and recognised me most of the time. I also had a chance to try out Continuum and it's certainly a very good idea, the ability to pick up on your phone where you left off with a keyboard and mouse could be amazing, it works well with the included apps. Sometimes it behaves weirdly though, Instgram is unusable in Continuum for example, and it had the habit of giving me the keyboard on the device.Whilst I haven't tested the battery life extensively, I had no real issues with it. I didn't have any particularly long days during my time testing it. Whilst it could still be a problem for some, but it's certainly good enough for my use.The camera and the hardware camera button was possibly my favourite thing about the device. The phone has one of the best camera apps I've used, manual focus, ISO, exposure, white balance, DNG and JPEG shooting, all with a great UI, I've used an LG G3 and the amount of control is about the same, but I definitely prefer the 950XL UI. The photos taken are sharp, and looked good both inside and on an overcast day. There was the tendancy to blow out the highlights, but this could be fixed with the exposure compensation, I think the Auto HDR+ mode on the 6P probably has the edge here, but for non HDR shooting the 950XL would be my preferred device. I've put some comparison shots between the 950XL and Nexus 6P so you can make your own decision. In all, I like the 950XL as a device. The hardware is good, the camera is fantastic, Hello works well, it's fast and seems reliable. The out of the box experience could certainly be better. I'm really one app short of being able to switch without compromise, Google Inbox would be missed but I do like the built in email app, Authy again, could easily be replaced by another 2FA app. It's messaging apps where it is really difficult to move away, for a lot of people that's going to be apps like Snapchat, and it's certainly sad that there is no support there. The situation has definitely been improving, and for some it may already have all the apps they need, with Project Islandwood surely helping developers too.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromAn amazing phone! I really want one!Microsoft has recently lent me a Lumia 950xl for review. I appreciate being able to use this loan unit but that has not influenced my opinion of the device or of Microsoft – this is my personal view and no 3rd party has influence directly or indirectly on my opinions. To be honest I fell in love with this unit the moment it arrived. Everything was easy to set up, OneNote and my Email. One issue I had was it getting hot but I seemed to have fixed that with turning bluetooth off and using WIFI only when I need it. The camera is amazing at 20 megapixels. I took some great photo with it. I currently use an Iphone 4s so it is quite a bit quicker than that. The 5.7” AMOLED screen is nice and sharp: The device itself is light despite its size. I thought the build quality was really good and felt comfortable with it in my pocket. I am seriously considering buying one.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromMS recently lent me a Lumia 950 xl amazing phone“Microsoft has recently lent me a Lumia 950 xl for review. I appreciate being able to use this loan unit but that has not influenced my opinion of the device or of Microsoft – this is my personal view and no 3rd party has influence directly or indirectly on my opinions”.Well out of box the look and feel was amazing The back of the Lumia 950 XL is removable to give users access to the user-replaceable battery, nano-SIM card slot (or slots, as is the case with this dual-SIM phone), and microSD expansion slot. A removable back and expansion are features many users crave, but in the case of the Lumia 950 XL, the matte polycarbonate backing gives the phone a less-than-premium feel. It’s a smooth, lightweight back cover that, unfortunately, feels kind of cheap. There are, however, replacement backs available, including some wrapped in leather, which should help. However on the plus side, the Lumia 950 XL's backing is completely removable and gives user access to the phone's battery as well, which is also user serviceable and replaceable. This is a rarity now among smartphones these days.On the back of the device, the 20MP rear-facing camera and triple-LED flash reside in circular protrusion at the top, with a speaker grill just off to the left. And at the top and bottom there are a subtle perforations for microphones. “PureView Zeiss” is emblazoned just below the camera and a reflective Windows logo sits just below that.took a while to get used to its size as im used to a smaller lumia 1020 which fits perfect for one hand surfing ect but after a day i can say it sits just as comfortable in hand and at a stretch thumb can now surf just as good if not better and faster than my 1020,will say a nice leather cover would be nice for that true none slipe grip which with the 950xl is available.I'm finding the performance in all aspects to be strong, It takes a Nano sim card so had to get new as 1020 is a micro sim card minor anoyanse.I like being able to expand the memory 32Gb storage expandable by up to 200Gb using a microSD card, with office 365 offer 1tb OneDrive storage which is free for the first year then subscription which works out at just over a £1 a week but for what you get office 365 and 1tb storage amazing offer. and a feature like being able to just replace the battery is really sensible when it shows signs of reduced capacity.Wasnt to thrilled with usb-3 so old usb devices and leads dont fit but it is down to the super fast charger and data transfer wow faster than my desktop was amazed and from 0% to full charge in 2hrs and bonus its a Removable 3340mAh battery, USB-C fast charging, wireless charging14. With its 5.7 inch AMOLED touch screen (1440x2560) with Gorilla Glass 4 and super fast Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor surfing, streaming, downloading is almost instant and for playing games screen size and picture quality exceptional. Now for the camera which i had some doubt over as its only half the spec of lumia 1020 and its 41mp camera after comparing it is less but more in picture quality and definition with its 20 Mp PureView camera with Carl Zeiss optics & triple LED flash Ultra HD video at 30fps 5 Mp wide angle front-facing camera and the speed of the images truely amazing and with video zoom colour brightness all can be utelized as recording again amazing how did i manage without this option.Best of all for me was Hello Windows iris scanning technology allows you to sign onto your device with your iris, better than fingerprint, because while you are asleep anyone can swipe your fingerprint on your device with iris and pin code almost impossible for someone to access your device love it.Glance screen is better than ever, you can view instant notifications by looking at it and also tell the time without unlocking the device thereby using zero battery for the taskand set night mode or quiet hours so no more disturbances while you sleep.Mail app which is Outlook email all messages are in one place for all accounts so easier to check and delete emails plus, calendar, word, excel, power point and one note. It is just mind blowing using these in-built apps. You can access one note from the drop down menu.It has the best keyboard in the world. The keyboard can been moved to any part of the screen, it can be resized,it has directional arrows which moves the cursor to any direction you want when you're typing,it has the fastest swipe to spell and equally accurate, emoji,it is available in all major languages of the world, totally the best word prediction and auto-correction.In simple words it makes typing on the device very easy and graceful. The calculator has lots of options, it can be used for all kinds of calculations e.g scientific, statistics, programmer, converter, etc.It can be used as a desktop device by attaching the HD display dock. The on-screen menu navigation keys allows you to hide the menu keys which create more screen estate for browsing and watching videos etc, it also prevents you from mistakenly clicking on them while you're intensely play a game on the device. The volume and power keys are within the reach of the thumb. Once you get used to it, you easily increase or reduce the volume, lock/unlock the device.Pressing and holding the menu allows you to reach distant apps or links easily.Voices/speech of different major languages in the world can be downloaded and used for related apps e.g maps, Cortana, audio books, etc. With its outstanding connectivity includes Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS Skype, WhatsApp, SMS, MMS. It's also just 8.1mm thick, so it's incredibly comfortable in your hand.Lumia 950 XL,the phone that works like your PC.Super sleek at just 8.1mm thin, runs Windows 10 and packs Continuum capabilities and a 5.7-inch Quad HD display. It’s large enough to be productive, yet mobile enough to meet your daily phone needs. To find a setting on your phone, swipe over to the App list, and then select Settings. We’ve categorized stuff to help make Settings easier to use,but if you’re having trouble finding something, select Search and then enter a setting in the search box.To pin a setting to your Start screen, in Settings, select a category, press and hold a setting in the list, and then select Pin to start. Also more options in the Action center From almost anywhere on your phone, swipe down from the top of the screen to open action center. You’ll see your latest app notifications and quick actions you can take. And in Windows 10 , action center is even better—with more actionable notifications, more useful notification dismissal and more quick action options. Act on notifications: When a notification appears on your screen or when you view one in action center, take action without opening the app. Expand notifications to see more details and act on certain notifications, whether it’s “liking” a social network post or replying to a message. Expand quick actions: Also, you now have the option of dismissing a single notification instead of a whole group.Music now if you love your music youll be amazed at the quality of the sound with its 3.5mm stereo headset connector and option to stream or play your own mp3 music even stream from your one drive its got a whole new player in Groove music from creating you own playlists to just playing all from onedrive device or streamContinuum a whole new era Plug your Lumia 950 or 950 XL into a Display Dock and the external monitor starts up.The keyboard and mouse are ready to go, and with a 60 FPS refresh rate, catching up on email is flicker-free and super-smooth. With 1080p HD output and a USB-C port that charges your phone while you work, it’s a quick and easy way to get the productivity advantages of using a bigger screen. The freedom to leave your laptop at work Add a Display Dock to your home office and do more without using your computer.Want to write a long email or create a PowerPoint presentation but don’t have your PC? Dock your Lumia 950 or 950 XL and use a monitor, mouse and keyboard to quickly create a PC-like work environment. With a bigger screen and the convenience of a full size keyboard, you don’t need your laptop to be productive at home.Keep using your phoneEnjoy a PC-like experience that’s powered by your phone. And while you’re working on an external monitor, you can still use your Lumia 950 or 950 XL like you would normally– answer phone calls and send text messages without interrupting what’s on the big screen. Maximize your productivity with the advantages of a bigger screen and keep using your phone at the same time. All in all i dont want to send this 950xl back in fact its has become my life my friend my world Cortana has become my assistant never forgetting to remind me of schedules events calendar helps with sending emails searching having a chat not literally but maybe soon shes a best friend who gives you heads up on almost everything sometimes important sometimes not but shes their to help and i love her voice.New Universal Windows Apps, now available in the Windows Store, i have given them all a try:• Shazam much better and quicker than before never miss that tune you here but just cannot remember and it will give you option to listen add purchase add to playlist but with a much more smoother feel than on previous versions.• The Weather Channel set on home screen and never not know when its not going to rain again with lots of new options and a whole world of weather• Netflix loads without hicups and streams perfectly with a docking port makes my fire stick obsolete picture quality is on par with my samsung 4k tv amazing picture almost life like.• Talking tom had to include this one as it was forced upon me and sound picture amazingly real my cats think ive a new cat and are giving me some looks as i play at my daughters insistence she 4yrs old and loves this game and wants this phone now she is amazed at how clear and how real it sounds had her giggli

Rated 5 out of5 by fromGreat phoneI bought the 950XL as an upgrade to my 1520 phone.Wow what an improvement. With the 950XL you have 3GB of RAM, 32GB hard memory with the SD Card optionwhich makes this an exciting device compared to older models. The sensible option of being able to replace the battery, instead of getting it done by a 3rd party, so it's done immediately if and when this presents itself. And for those who choose, you now have the option with the appropriate "bits" via Continuum to work off a pc, using the appropriate "bits" become a pc instead of a phone (not tried it yet myself, but seen it - wow). With the Windows 10 OS and the phone hardware, this is certainly the best hand set I've had over the years of Lumia devices (started with 900, 920, 930 & 1520 devices) this is definately the best. With any system there are continual improvements, so if there's a bug or peculiarity, it will get sorted, that's how good M.S. support is.
