Installation and FAQ

How do I install Office?

After purchase, you can install Office at www.office.com/myaccount. For more information, see the FAQ.

What's the difference between Office 365 plans and Office 2016 suites?

Office 365 plans include the complete suite of Office applications, plus other services that are enabled over the Internet, including extra cloud storage with OneDrive and Skype minutes for home use. With Office 365 you get the full, installed Office experience on PCs, Macs, tablets (including Windows, iPad, and Android) and smartphones. Office 365 plans are available as a monthly or annual subscription. With Office 365, upgrades are always included with your subscription.

Office 2016 suites, including Office Home & Student and Home & Business, include applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote; they are available as a one-time purchase for use on a single PC or Mac. The applications are not automatically updated; to get the latest version, you must purchase Office again when the new version becomes available.

Rated 3 out of5 by fromCan't use my own domain nameI've used Network Solutions POP mail for 15 years and finally decided to move to Office 365 Home. We only use 2 mailboxes so 365 Home is a good fit and the price is right. I have to admit I was really disappointed after making my purchase that I would not be able to point my own domain name to the Office 365 mail servers. I had to keep my Network Solutions POP mailboxes and forward email from Network Solutions to Office 365. That meant I could not eliminate the Network Solutions expense so I ended paying for 2 email solutions. So overall, the Office 365 solutions wasn't as cheap as the Microsoft sales literature would have you believe.

Rated 1 out of5 by fromVERY DISSAPOINTING RESULTS!!!I am an above average Excel user.As I am working by my own, I acquired an Office 2016 package and my current Excel files are stalled, slow, broken down, and other failures that are bringing me crazy!I usually work with a selfmade Excel file with no Macros, Dynamic Tables or other heavy memory or resource demanding (size no more than 700 Kb) and for example to delete a row, it says that the instruction can not be performed due to lack of memory, reccomending an upgrade from 32 to 64 bits. Is it possible?, it never happened to me before!Yesterday the system itself performed an on line repair and things are going a little bit better. I hope I would not face the reported troubles again.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromLove Office365I have been a user off MS Office since it began and have always had a personal copy since 2001.Office365 is a great feature to add to the Office family. I haven't had any issues with using any of the applications online and then using the desktop versions or saving/using data stored in OneDrive.I love the added benefit of having more storage space on OneDrive because I use so many office applications. I have enough room to store Access databases, Excel Spreadsheets, Word Documents, PowerPoint Presentations and of course, I would be lost without OneNote or my Outlook calendar.I recommend anyone who is a heavy user of MSOffice to consider Office365. It has been a time-saver in so many ways.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromHad to buy to get Android version!I had the complete Office 2013 Suite already installed, but, after beta-testing the preview of the product for Android, for some reason, MS decided not to offer the free version to those with tablets larger than 10". So, I had to buy a subscription just to get the products on my tablet. While it works fine on the tablet (and actually has some nice features), installing Office 365 Home on my desktop was problematic, and required a lengthy tech support call to repair some glitches (short version -- remove Office 2013 before installing Office 365!)

Rated 1 out of5 by fromNot enough "Professional" FeaturesLove the fact that you can install for five users. Love the fact it is Cloud-based and allows install of Office on the desktop/laptop PCs. HATE the fact that you can't register your own domain against it. HATE the fact you don't get SharePoint to be able to create a "family" website, or Lync, or more of those features to enable "easy" sharing (such as those features available in the Small Business edition. PLEASE Microsoft, make the Home edition the same as the Small Business Edition (at the same price as the current "Home" edition. Would even consider a £110 a year sub for the features of Small Business Edition, if it was available for five users on one sub?

Rated 3 out of5 by fromFinally the same on Mac and PCI am working on both platforms. Mac and PC. I like that the programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote) behave the same on both.OUTLOOK on the other hand...well !!! Setting up my exchange e-mail through Outlook on a Mac was a 2 minute deal (it was setup through the Internet Account option). On the PC version, the settings that I copied from the Mac version did not work. The Mac version did it all automatically with a few inputs on server names and domains, the PC version fails. Also, every time I change my password, I need to delete teh exchange account and reinstall it in order to work.MICROSOFT... you have more work to do :)

Rated 3 out of5 by fromLimit to file path lengthSome files that I uploaded to OneDrive from my Windows 7 home PC could not be downloaded to my work PC, also running Windows 7, due to exceeding a path+file name length of 255 characters. It took a couple of weeks to resolve this issue as OneDrive seemed to provide very little feedback other than a given file couldn't be downloaded. I ended up deleting the offending files. After transferring 30+GB of files into OneDrive there were about 16 files that would not transfer. OneDrive kept telling me to save it via a banner at the top of each document as I loaded it. That never changed anything so I ended up making a copy of the file with a slightly different name and saving it in the same location which OneDrive then immediately uploaded. I then deleted the original document. This fixed all of my problems but it took a while.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromGood for multiple devicesThis is a single Office product that gives me access pretty much all of the Office components I'd ever need. The main plus for me is that I can use it on all of my devices (2 laptops and a phone) and I get to keep my documents in the cloud rather than having to obtain via email attachments or transfer via USB. I generally just use Word and Excel, but this also gives me access to Outlook (in my opinion the best email program out there - certainly the most intuitive) and Publisher which I've tried for the first time. Given what you get, I think it's pretty good value for money.
