Ratings and reviews

Rated 5 out of5 by fromLove it - wish I could've kept it!Microsoft has recently lent me a Surface Pro 4 for review. I appreciate being able to use this loan unit but that has not influenced my opinion of the device or of Microsoft – this is my personal view and Microsoft have no influence directly or indirectly on my opinionsAs part of my loan, I got the Surface Pro 4, Pen, Cover Type Keyboard, Surface Arc Touch Mouse, Surface Dock & VGA Adapter. Despite my best intensions, I never got chance to try the Surface Dock or VGA Adapter. When I initially took it out of its packaging, I was overwhelmed with the quality of the product. A great finish, very lightweight for its size (12.3 inch screen), and very easy to set up.From turning on to loading the full Windows 10, it takes less than a minute. It has the speed of the tablet but the functionality of a desktop – a great combination. My big question was how well it would work as a laptop. Most people use laptops on a desk and it works well on them. If you use it on your lap (ie when on the sofa) then it holds well but don’t feel quite as sturdy as a laptop in that scenario at first but over the time of using it, I got used to it and it felt just as natural as a laptop did. Those were my initial thoughts but I thought it best to review the good and bad:Good:Full Windows 10 – I can anything on it I would normally be able to do on a laptop / desktop, it’s not hampered by the limitations in mobile operating systems. It loads quickly so I can quickly load it up and start doing – whether that’s using Office, going on social media or working, within a minute I can be doing it.Keyboard – I wasn’t expecting this to feel so nice but it felt like a proper keyboard. It also lights up when connected to the Surface Pro 4 and had a proper feel of a keyboard.Surface Pen – This was a joy to write with. There are a few tricks (ie click once for OneNote to load) that are really useful and the best sensation to describe how it feels when you write with it is when you use a pen on a newly opened writing pad. It doesn’t feel like using a computer at all but naturally. My son also used it (He’s 5) and wrote better using it than he would do using a normal pen & paper.Surface Arc Touch Mouse – This felt smooth and easy to operate. Click it round to turn on and click it flat to turn off. The only thing I’d say is I have quite big hands so it felt a little small to me but there are other sizes you can buy so I would go bigger.Bad:The on-screen keyboard – This is the only thing I can fault it on. When the keyboard isn’t attached, if you go to type something out you had to manually load it from the taskbar. It’s not a big thing by any means but just something that would make it better.ConclusionIn conclusion, this is a great laptop. I say laptop even though it’s a hybrid of both because the functionality it presents it’s more laptop than tablet. It’s great to have the option to remove the keyboard and carry on working as normal if needed. It’s certainly one I’ll be looking at buying in the near future.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromGreat productThis is a fantastic product. It is outstanding and has completely replaced my laptop and tablet. Powerful, sleek, a dream to use and light. Works excellent as tablet or as a laptop.I did have a couple of software bugs when I first bought it 6 months ago but Microsoft support has been amazing and has seen to every issue which were are software based with updates specifically catered for my issues.I was worried that I would regret not holding out for the Surface Book to become available in UK when I purchase my Surface Pro 4 but I have no regrets. They are both great systems and each have their merits and I believe one can be happy with either unless you truly do require the GPU in the Surface Book. You will know if you are that user that does require it so do purchase the Surface Book if that is a necessity.I also use the Surface Dock to connect my Pro 4 to my desktop station and it is outstanding in that setup as well. The bonus of having the extra screen on the Surface is excellent, special with the pen input which has completely replaced my Wacom.Well done Microsoft. I am back on the Windows team.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromgreat bit of techReview of Microsoft surface pro 4Microsoft has recently lent me a surface pro 4 for review. I appreciate being able to use this loan unit but that has not influenced my opinion of the device or of Microsoft – this is my personal view and no 3rd party has influence directly or indirectly on my opinions. On unpacking the surface Pro 4, the high quality was apparent its slim aluminium case looks and feels amazing. But is it worth the extra money?I watched a film on both the Lenovo and the Surface. The surface Pro is hands down better for this activity. The depth and colour is far better the HD screen is amazing and although it would never be as good as a HD TV it is more than good enough to watch movies whilst travelling on the train. The only negative thing I have found (other than the price), is that the anodised aluminium back casing scratches incredibly easy. I have only had the device for two weeks and the back has half a dozen scratches. I just hope I don’t get charged for it.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromVery ImpressedI've had this Surface Pro 4 for about 3 weeks now and I am officially impressed. I previously had a separate tablet and a small notebook/laptop. This has replaced both so easily. The battery lasts for ages - certainly more than enough for a few meetings during the day and then a couple of hours work in the evening. The screen is crystal clear, the sound quality is very good and the pen makes note taking, sketching project ideas etc.. so simple. I bought the basic keyboard to go with it and again, very good. It even takes a 200gb Micro SD card as well.My wife wants one now so I'm probably going to upgrade to the Surface Book and let her have mine.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromdidnt like this at first, but now love it1st of all I'm an ex apple user , having bought x3 iPad in totalAlso I only want it as a tablet so heave nommeed for the pen or the keyboard,In the office I pair it with a keyboard & mouse on my deskForced to move to a windows based tablet as was in need of a full OS for certain things1st surface pro 4 I received had a faulty screen ....not a good startI returned this to receive a replacement which worked fine but I really didn't use it for a few months ( kept reaching for my iPad )However after a few Microsoft updates I am now enjoying my SP4 very muchI might purchase the smaller charger (shame this wasn't standard in the first place )I have no idea why I'd ever use the stylus, I have also removed the kick stand and have found a slick thin case that's similar to apples iPad one but not so niceOverall I am now very happy with my purchase this is a small yet very powerful deviceFew points & requests :Higher capacity battery is a must m(I'll fit myswlf!)Tablet case -light thin no keyboard, stand works from front coverMicrosoft should over deliver on battery life stats not under deliver, this makes me doubt all other claims. (apple over deliver which is very smart )Sorry to keep mentioning apple but this is my experience

Rated 5 out of5 by fromDidn't want to hand it overI bought a pro 4 (top spec) for one of my employees. After I'd set it up for them we had a christmas break, so I kept it for a few weeks. I have a 15inch mac book pro and I swear I fell so much in love with the surface pro I'm toying with the macbook having an accident so I can get one of these for myself. I honestly did not want to hand it over when the time came. We are a digital/creative agency so use the full suite of Adobe cloud stuff, and this had run everything effortlessly. The real joy though is that because it also has the surface dock, she's able to plug it in and run two other 27 inch screens whilst still using the tablet screen as a third screen. So it isn't just a case of being both a laptop or tablet, it is also her everyday desktop and it handles it with aplomb. Awesome kit.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromGood enough to give Windows a try again after 15yThis is what I expected since I saw the first iPad:A laptop turned into a tablet, not just a huge phone!I knew about Surfaces since first iteration, but just didn't like them when I tried, for this one, I have read many good comments, so I decided to buy, despite of the extremely high price, and I'm still satisfied.Screen looks great!Typing is great!Pen works great!Speed is very good. It's really portable, looks and feels like an A4/US-letter notebook. But has some issues that reduce the experience satisfaction:-Waking up takes some time.-It doesn't wake up, I would say 5 in 100 times, so I had to hard reboot.-Keyboard doesn't respond sometimes, something related to an issue of suspending when folded back.-Battery doesn't last as advertised....-Many programs look too small in the High DPI screen, but that's not the Surface to blame.-There are currently no linux drivers for the input methods, so I'm being forced to use Windows (I switched to Linux 15 years ago), and I have to learn some stuff. But in the end currently most of the work I do is it in the browser (gmail, google drive), and the main programs I use work in Windows: libreoffice, inkscape, gimp, draftsight, freecad, dropbox.
