Ratings and reviews

Rated 4 out of5 by fromOne highly exasperating flawIn general this is an excellent ultrabook: lightweight, slim, with an impressively capacious (for ultrabooks) solid-state drive, and at a very favorable price point. However, the placement of the dual speaker/mic jack is too close to the micro HDMI port, making it virtually impossible to have both a micro-HDMI adapter and headphones, or in my case, external speakers plugged in. I have an older monitor with no HDMI in, and therefore need to use an HDMI to DVI cable to use the external monitor. I cannot, however, plug in the speakers at the same time, because the micro-HDMI adapter is too wide to allow simultaneous use of a 3.5 stereo plug. Even right-angle audio plugs won't work.

Rated 2 out of5 by fromSleep Issue, otherwise would be a solid laptopHad for about 40 days, but there is an issue in some of these laptops that Asus cannot seem to solve. When you put the computer to sleep it will turn on (even with lid closed) after about 3 hours, which drains the battery. I come home with Zenbook in my bag and in sleep, in morning it is near dead in hibernate mode.Search youtube for other examplesI have checked to make sure there is no peripherals turning it on. I worked with Asus support to install new bios, but that didn't help. Interestingly, it may not cause you an issue if you leave the power settings EXACTLY at default, but if you want to, say, dim the screen after 2 mins even that seems to trip it up. Support did not have any solution other than to send in the laptop (but I don't have a back up I can use for weeks while they fix).Microsoft has told me I can return and exchange for something else (thank you, MS!).

Rated 4 out of5 by fromGreat Value & Performance, with One Major DrawbackI bought this partly because of the positive reviews from publications such as Laptop and partly because of a great experience with the Asus ZenFone 2. Like the ZenFone, this laptop has great specs for the price. It doesn't lag even with Outlook, Word and multiple browser tabs open. I'm a writer, and I find the keyboard excellent in terms of size and key travel. My other laptop is a mid-2012 MacBook Air. I considered buying another one, but the ZenBook had specs and reviews that were comparable, and it's less than half the price. I couldn't justify the Air's premium. After a few weeks with the ZenBook, I don't regret choosing it over the Air.The ZenBook's Achilles heel is the trackpad. It's waaaaay too touchy, and there don't appear to be any options for adjusting the sensitivity. I frequently delete emails, close tabs and resize windows by mistake, to the point that I'm considering carrying a mouse. Many other owners have the same complaints, so buyer beware if you think this will annoy the heck out of you. The Air's trackpad is far, far superior. If it weren't for the trackpad, I'd give the ZenBook five stars.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromFantastic ValueThis is a great laptop at an exceptional price. It's very thin and light. I use it primarily for web browsing and MS Office apps. Performance has been great -- it's a lot faster than my work laptops (~2.5 year old, Core i5). No problems having 8-9 open tabs in Chrome while running Word, Excel, and iTunes. Under my typical usage scenario the laptop barely gets warm and I have seen no processor throttling. Apps open very quickly.Battery life seems quite good, although I rarely use it for more than 4-5 hours at a time. Normally when I plug it back in it's still 60% charged.Keyboard is good - no issues using it to type long documents. Note that this laptop doesn't have a backlit keyboard, so if that is on your list of requirements you may want to look elsewhere. Trackpad is good as well. It's not quite as large as the trackpad on a MacBook Air, but it's big enough. Motion is pretty smooth (although not as smooth as my Apple Magic Trackpad). The target area for right clicking is fairly small - that frustrated me at first until I realized that it isn't anywhere on the right side of the touchpad (it's the lower right corner only). Gestures also work pretty well, although using a 4-finger swipe to change desktops isn't always as easy as it should be.The display on this laptop is good - no issues. I did notice that if you boot it up in a dark room you will see some backlight bleed at the bottom of the display. Not an issue at all during use however - I have yet to see any backlight bleed during normal operation.I also use this laptop docked via a USB 3 universal dock. This way I only have to plug in one USB cord and the power cord to the computer to have a fully functional external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I chose this method for convenience, and because I worry about how rugged the micro HDMI port would be if subjected to regular plugging and unplugging. I have tried the micro HDMI port, however, and it works without issue. For the price, this is truly a great laptop. I researched this laptop extensively before purchase, and it has lived up to all my expectations so far. It's very nice to get it from Microsoft as well (i.e., no bloatware). I hope that this laptop will last as long as my previous laptop (also an Asus, which runs fine after 6 years but has become quite slow running modern software).

Rated 3 out of5 by fromNeeds more workI had frequent messages that the display driver shut down & recovered even after I installed the latest driver. If I rebooted the computer it would go away for awhile. The lid would not stay in place when using the laptop in my lap. When would tilt the front of it up the lid would fall back & need to be propped up with a pillow to hold it at the angle I wanted for viewing. With the laptop open the front edge of the of the deck has a sharp edge the irritated the edge of my hand to the point of making it sore. The track pad is a bit temperamental. Some times I would have to tap it repeatedly before it would register. If these issues were resolved, it would be a nice unit.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromBest value out thereI purchased this coming from a MacBook. I was not sure what to expect but based on the reviews I was hoping this was a much more affordable machine with a high end feel. And that is exactly what this machine is.Upon taking the device out of the box the first thing you notice is how thin it is. It has a premium feel to it. The trackpad works great too. It is large and gets my input right almost all the time, including when I use gestures. The matte screen is gorgeous (I got the non-touch model). The keyboard keys have just the right amount of travel so that it does not feel spongy.Another concern I had with this was the Core M processor. But this machine is really fast. I don't do much compute intensive work but I keep a lot of browser tabs open and this handles all that with no problem. The speakers are really the only downside of this machine. They are very tinny sounding. My old Mac had much better sound. The wifi is fast, but it is not as fast as some other machines I've used. About 30 feet away from my AC router and all I get is about 90mbps. Other device can max out my cable connection at 165mbps when testing on AC. I haven't moved closer to test to see if it is an antennae issue or just a limit on the card. But 90mbps is still fast enough to do anything online that I need to do.Overall I am very pleased with this high end laptop that I purchased at a very affordable price. The only other thing I'll mention is to be sure to check the specific model you purchase if you get it somewhere else. The model I purchased is the UX305-CA. There are models with different letters at the end. Some of the older models don't include AC wifi and may have different trackpads.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromExcellent Budget UltrabookI was looking for a cheap Ultrabook that didn't need high-end specs but still had the build quality of a more expensive model. That's exactly what I got with the UX305CA. And the specs are actually pretty nice, you get a bigger SSD and more RAM than is typical in this price range. The low-power CPU limits what you can do with this machine, but it's plenty strong for basic computing with the added benefit of being fanless/silent. It also stays remarkably cool.My biggest complaint is one I already saw mentioned here, and that is the placement of the power button. It is right where you would expect the delete key to be, and that's a key I use all the time. I would recommend changing the power button behavior through Windows to make it less annoying.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromSo Far So Excellent!Purchased Asus Zenbook UX305CA-UHM1. Received this laptop about 10 days ago. I am VERY happy with it. It is light and fast. Running Windows 10, Office 365 Personal, ProDoc and some other programs. Exported 5 gigs of email and 20 Gigs of other files from old laptop running Windows XP, Outlook Express, ProDoc, and lots more programs. Used Aid4Mail to convert Outlook Express emails to Outlook .pst file. Connected Epson Workforce Scanner GT-S50 and Xerox Phaser color printer. Connected Rocketfish Micro/Mini HDMI to HDMI adapter and J1 HDMI to VGA adapter (both support Full HD 1080p) and older 32" LG LCD monitor with VGA input. Also connected LG Slim Portable Blu-ray/DVD writer Model BP50NB40. All hardware and software thus far work flawlessly! Only one minor issue with Aid4Mail unrelated to hardware and the issue was easily resolved. (I only mention this because converting my old OE emails and attachments and being able to open and use them in Outlook 2016 was a priority!) The quality of the build of this laptop is outstanding and that there is no backlit keyboard is not an issue with me. I HIGHLY recommend this beautiful laptop!
