What's the difference between Office 365 plans and Office 2016 suites?

Office 365 plans include the complete suite of Office applications, plus other services that are enabled over the Internet, including extra cloud storage with OneDrive and Skype minutes for home use. With Office 365 you get the full, installed Office experience on PCs, Macs, tablets (including Windows, iPad, and Android) and smartphones. Office 365 plans are available as a monthly or annual subscription. With Office 365, upgrades are always included with your subscription.

Office 2016 suites, including Office Home & Student and Home & Business, include applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote; they are available as a one-time purchase for use on a single PC or Mac. The applications are not automatically updated; to get the latest version, you must purchase Office again when the new version becomes available.

Ratings and reviews

Rated 1 out of5 by fromDon't Upgrade to This!I work with office all the time between work and home and had to upgrade at home recently. I REALLY WISH I had seen the reviews before I did. This version is so much more difficult to use. The ribbons at the top are all different making it hard to find much of the things that you need. I am still looking for "MARGINS" in Power Point and finally had to bring my work laptop home. Excel is harder, you have to go in between two separate menu buttons just to input numbers in a spreadsheet and then total at the bottom. I would not recommend this product and am going to go back to the previous version as soon as possible! I just hope that I can get my money back!

Rated 1 out of5 by fromMissing too many features!I have been using Libreoffice on my Mac until the 2016 release became available. I was so excited to finally download the Office Suite, because I wanted to do things in Excel like Create Pivot Tables Using Data from Multiple Sheets Within the Same Workbook. Guess what? That feature was removed from Excel 2016. Guess what else was removed? The Remove Duplicates option. This version of Excel is basically useless to me and I know need to figure out how to return it and will be purchasing the 2011 version. Though older, it apparently actually functions better than it's shinier new counterpart.

Rated 2 out of5 by fromGreat when it isn't CRASHING!The new icons looks nice, the application itself is great when it's not crashing. I am in the middle of my school session and I have to do PowerPoint slides with every assignment. PowerPoint worked for about a week after my initial install, and now it won't even open without saying there is an error and I need to activate my account. I activated it, closed PowerPoint (myself) and restarted my computer several times and I am still having the issue. I am on this site now so I can try to reinstall the Office Suite and warn people before purchasing. I am so irritated! Good luck to everyone else.

Rated 1 out of5 by fromNo GoodMy old MacBook Air broke and when I bought my new MacBook I had to purchase Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac for it since I couldn't find the code to re download Office 2011 for Mac. The main program I use is Excel, and this new version is horrible. The main problem is that it re-formats old excel documents which means that you cannot open an older Excel document and have it look the same. Also, once you have made changes in a document to make it work properly in Excel 2016, then it no longer works in 2011. This is a huge problem for someone like me who has hundreds of work documents set up in previous versions of Excel that I also share with other Excel users. This is a major glitch and I don't understand how Microsoft got away with releasing a product with such a major flaw.

Rated 2 out of5 by fromStruggling with MacI bought this a few weeks ago after having switched my system from a Windows-based system to Mac. I am a small business owner and Microsoft makes superior office products, but there are multiple other programs I needed to use with Mac so I switched. Word crashed 13 times yesterday alone. My productivity has tanked. I hope the bugs get worked out. As of this writing, it is March 2016 so anything you have read about patches and fixes being taken care of since last October with the advent of Mac's El Capitan have yet to be fixed.

Rated 2 out of5 by fromCan't customize the ribbon. So sad.One of the best features of Office 2013 was the ability to customize the ribbon--without having to hunt and peck all over the ribbon for the functions used most, you could put everything in one place. I'm not sure why they took this function away, but I hate it. And it breaks my heart, because giving negative reviews is not really my thing. But I'd really like this to be fixed on an update! Pretty please, bring back the customizeable ribbon. With sugar on top.

Rated 1 out of5 by fromStorage HogI would definitely not recommend purchasing this product. We had Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac prior, and it was much better. Other than the annoying way it brings you to their cloud every time you try to open a file, the program is a complete storage hog. It duplicates several massive files for each of the four programs instead of leveraging common resources. There are work arounds, but you have to re-do them every time Microsoft releases an update. I am reverting back to Office for Mac 2011 as this thing is just terrible.

Rated 2 out of5 by fromDoesn't work under El Capitan.I purchased the software before the release of El Capitan.. Office 2016 seems to work fine and appreciate that on the version of the operating system that I am currently running(Yosemite). Unfortunately, your testing was not sufficient for the new operating system and the internet is loading with people not being able to use your software El Capitan. I am therefore waiting for your bug fix release so that I can upgrade my operating system.
