Ratings and reviews

Rated 5 out of5 by fromSleek, powerful, high cool-factorBought this for work (purchased through work; I work at a Fortune 100 company) with my work image on it - essentially have my office now where ever I go. It is fast, efficient and works like a charm. The pen works great too, better than previous surfaces. Screen size is an advantage over Surface 3/4. Battery life is NOT a problem (i7, 16 GB Ram, 512 GB HD) - easily travel and get 9 hours on a single charge easily. Two issues I do experience that detract from the overall experience: does not start at random times when is goes to sleep; runs hot, especially when I pack it into my briefcase immediately after charging (this happens only occasionally, however, cannot make rhyme nor reason when it does). I have had a Surface RT, Surface PRO2, Surface PRO3, Surface 3 and Surface PRO4. I traded my surface Pro3 for a 4 and use this as my personal computing device around the house and my Surface 3 LTE for travel. Windows 10 is a great OS. The surface book is the perfect work computer, PERIOD.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromMy Best Laptop YetThis list will outline the pros and cons of the i7, 8 GB, dGPU version of the surface book:Pros:+ Versatile: Can use it anywhere comfortably as a tablet or a laptop.+ Light: It really is.+ Fast: Startup never took more than 20 seconds with Windows Hello on.+ Display: Gorgeous 3000x2000 resolution for my movies, shows and games,+ Battery: Lowest I've had is 4 hours and 30 minutes. That's plenty!+ Touch Screen and Pen: Smooth and responsive. The best I've had.+ Interface: The keyboard is well aligned and the touchpad is placed well.+ Cameras: Sharp.+ Sound: Some of the loudest and crisp out there.Other pluses would include a magnetic charger and being pretty.Cons:- Temperature: Raises to the point where touching it is painful behind the screen.- Gaming: Temperature rises, fans get loud and it can't handle mid-level graphics.Other cons include a slight disturbance when opening (lifting the screen) the laptop and the awkwardly placed headphone jack. But then again, there really is no better place to plug in the headphones so it's understandable.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromThis is Exactly what I needI just purchased this product. I love the pen on it and have so many uses for it. Besides the pen is pure fun. The pen is high quality with a solid feel and the pressure sensitivity is unbelievable, I am able to write accurately very small letters and tilt it and use it however I want for drawing. This serves as a lap top that I can take with me on the fly. I love the way I can detach the screen from the Key board and use it as a tablet. The picture is gorgeous. The processor works at lightening speed. The size of the screen is perfect. The tract pad works great. It runs adobe suite and I can code web pages on it. Movies on it look fantastic. The keyboard has a back light and feels solid. But the best part about it is how much fun it is. It has caused one of my kids to take an interest in art.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromAmazing design and qualityThe unboxing of my Core i7/512GB Surface Book was excellent. The unit arrived in a heavy duty white presentation box, completely pristine and perfect. The unit shipped with about 30% battery charge, so just enough to complete an initial setup without the AC adapter and still afford some time to tinker. Once setup complete, I immediately wanted to see just how well the undocking experience was, and after fighting with a ShellExperience component that was sitting in the background (a leftover from OOBE?), the Surface Book informed me that it was ready to undock. Click! A lift from the left, and the display easily lifted right off the keyboard, never missing a beat. And I really mean that - I was streaming a lossless WMA when I undocked, to see if it would hiccup, and it never missed a beat. Even after re-docking, the audio never so much as chirped. The video experience during an undocking/redocking was also outstanding, with the display only pausing for about 1 second, before it kept rolling. The audio never stopped. If you know anything about laptops and docking stations, you know that the process of docking and undocking is fairly traumatic to the OS, so the fact that this went through that process sight unseen is exceedingly rare. The physical hardware interconnection between the dock/keyboard and the tablet is magnetic, so when you request to undock, wires retract the magnets that grip onto metal tabs on the base. It's absolutely elegant, freakishly simple and fairly mind-blowing from an engineering perspective, considering these magnets are clearly strong enough to hold both parts together with genuine confidence. The audio quality is amazing for something that's only 1/4" thin. You WILL be impressed. The display resolution is fantastic, and ever bit just as peppy as Microsoft promised (even without the dGPU in the base!!). I can't wait to load this thing up and really put it to the test.If I had to complain about something, it would be the color of the keyboard keys. I would prefer something darker, to make it easier to see the letter printed on the keys - some additional contrast between the white backlight glow and the white-ish keys. Yes, there's a great keyboard backlight, but under the right lighting conditions, seeing the letters on the keys is somewhat difficult, because it's just a little too light-on-white to see under certain ambient lighting conditions. The only other thing that I thought was unexpected was the lack of ability to set screen brightness directly from the keyboard. Not even close to a problem; just an observation. I used my Surface Book at 50% brightness and it was plenty bright and comfortable on my eyes. There are two batteries in the Surface Book - one in the tablet, and one in the base with the discreet GPU, so the OS averages the two together when computing remaining battery life. Also, the OS tells you what the remaining life is in each battery, and also lets you know which battery is in use (usually both at the same time). The Surface Pen came to me with the battery already installed, so I didn't have to take it apart to add a battery. You pair the pen as part of the setup, so please don't expect it to work right away while setting up Windows 10 - the pairing process is covered several steps into the setup, then the pen works fine the rest of the time.Beyond that, there's only one critically important word of caution: Those of you with hairy legs might want to watch out for the dynamic fulcrum hinge as it eats leg hairs! Ouch!

Rated 4 out of5 by fromSurface Book (i7, 1 TB)This computer is absolutely amazing! It is really a unique, innovative computer with a lot of potential and power. But, it still needs some work on the software/firmware/drivers side.Pros: Great quality, lightweight, very powerful, long battery life, very fast. The three different modes (tablet, laptop, and screen reversed tablet) are really useful and allow for increased productivity and comfort. The Surface Pen being able to attach and detach to the screen side is really handy as well. It also seems to be able to play video games really good too, but with a catch that I'll explain in the Cons section of my review.Cons: The software and firmware/drivers are still buggy. Windows 10 is a really nice OS for the Surface Book, but the small bugs here and there dampen the experience. The firmware/drivers glitches are worse though. Here's some of the things I've noticed. It gets warm in it's sleep and it overheats in it's sleep if it's plugged in. It's fans blare and it gets hot plugged in and asleep. It seems to hibernate if it's left asleep for more than a couple of hours. Don't know if this is a feature or a glitch. About 5% of the times you touch the touch screen, it registers the tap an inch off from where you wanted. Once, it refused to start if it was plugged in. I unplugged it, it immediately started up. It has these random glitches like that and they ruin the experience a lot. When it comes to playing video games, it plays them good. It just gets rather hot with it's fans blaring. Next, when I got it, the batteries were completely dead. Hopefully, that didn't damage the batteries any. They seem to work and charge well though. Also, the USB ports are difficult to plug things into. Finally, you can't tell if it's fully charged when it's off. The charging light never turns off.Overall: A really nice computer that is absolutely amazing. I highly recommend it if you want something that isn't just a laptop and does a lot more. The bugs need to be worked out though because a device with that price tag should never, ever have bugs like that what so ever.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromNot perfectI bought this for travelling, to replace an 8 lb. hot and noisy Dell. I knew when I bought it I would be compromising on the screen size, but I really wanted something lighter.I have had it for 6 months and used it on one very long road trip (7 weeks overseas). I have had zero problems with detaching, tho most of my usage is non-detached (probably about 80/20). The wifi is great (I have never owned a machine w/o an ethernet port, so its a pleasant surprise). The i5 is as fast as it needs to be for my work (software developer). I love the lightness of it.I purchased the 8GB/256GB/i5, based on reviews, which led me to believe that a dGPU would lead to more heat, and thus more noise; so far, that supposition has been dead-on. Unless it is detached, this machine is completely silent, even in a hot climate like Florida.I love the case construction. The tablet is beautiful, the resolution superb; but as others have said, detaching it and playing a game (even something simple like free cell) will send it screaming into the red zone--not nice at all. But for casual sketching, note-taking, etc., detaching is ok.I hate the trackpad. To me its just plain broken, completely unresponsive about 30% of the time. MS needs to fix this. But as I always carry a mouse anyways this isn't a deal breaker. The keyboard, well, I knew that would be my compromise. I love the feel of it, but when I am working I long for the fuller keyboard of my Dells, as, on this, in my IDE, I have to constantly toggle the Fn on/off to get to my shortcuts, a definite productivity loss. Please MS could you add a row of dedicated F keys (even half-size would be good) for us developers? The battery life is incredible. I think I have got up to 11 hours at one time.Miscellaneous notes: Although I am an avid gamer, we don't allow games on work machines, so I can't comment there. I was surprised to find that the mini-displayport, by the way, works perfectly with a MB Air mini-displayport adapter! But sad to say that the sound port does not seem to work with the iphone ear buds; so still looking for a good headset for this.Bottom lineI would give this 5 stars for a working trackpad and a row of dedicated F keysI would buy this exact model again
