Installation and FAQ

How do I install Office?

After purchase, you can install Office at www.office.com/myaccount. For more information, see the FAQ.

What's the difference between Office 365 plans and Office 2016 suites?

Office 365 plans include the complete suite of Office applications, plus other services that are enabled over the Internet, including extra cloud storage with OneDrive and Skype minutes for home use. With Office 365 you get the full, installed Office experience on PCs, Macs, tablets (including Windows, iPad, and Android) and smartphones. Office 365 plans are available as a monthly or annual subscription. With Office 365, upgrades are always included with your subscription.

Office 2016 suites, including Office Home & Student and Home & Business, include applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote; they are available as a one-time purchase for use on a single PC or Mac. The applications are not automatically updated; to get the latest version, you must purchase Office again when the new version becomes available.

Ratings and reviews

Rated 5 out of5 by fromFeatures Improved & Sharing Is EasierI've been a long time user of Microsoft Office starting back when the installation process was done from floppy disks. The last version I had purchased was Office Professional 2007 so there was a bit of a learning curve with this new version but mostly with the ribbon. The same basics are still there but the biggest change for us was the ability to share documents a lot more easily than the way it had been handled in the past. That basic functionality was there but not being a techie, it (the process) wasn't the easiest to understand for home users.Microsoft must have listened because now it is. My spouse and I are now both looking for a job and being able to share our resumes with each other so we can help each other out has been quite valuable. There is also interoperability between the individual applications like with OneNote. OneNote is fairly new to me but once I took some of the education available for it, I now get it and use it more often than I thought I would. There was only one gotcha' if you sign up for the annual subscription and already have office installed on your system. Before you download and install the new version, remove your old one first. The subscription installation does not remove your old version so you will wind up as I did with Office 365 AND Office Professional 2007 on your system at the same time. When I did remove Office Professional 2007 I then had problems with Office 365 not working properly which took a "repair" installation. Overall it wasn't a big problem but an irritation all the same. With the subscription I can install it on 5 devices, so after I installed it on mine, we tried having my husband try to install it on his and it completely installed without any problems.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromExcellent DealA monthly service instead of having to buy each program individually. And I don't have to worry about the programs becoming obsolete. About time someone thought of this.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromSeamless upgrade from Office 2013So far, so good with Office 365. The install went very well, even when my wife turned off the computer during it. I started the install over and it seemed to take right up where it left off. I have used Access, Outlook, Excel, and Word without any additional training required. The install even retains pinned files and recently used files.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromEasy to install and great functionalityWe have a lot of PCs that we use at home and on the road. Being able to use the Office 365 product on five devices plus mobile phones is wonderful. Office 365 was easy to install and I love the calendar sharing features of Outlook. I have only had this up and running for several weeks but so far the experience is top notch and as a long time Microsoft Office user I have the functionality I have come to expect. This is highly recommended.
