Installation and FAQ

How do I install Office?

After purchase, you can install Office at www.office.com/myaccount. For more information, see the FAQ.

What's the difference between Office 365 plans and Office 2016 suites?

Office 365 plans include the complete suite of Office applications, plus other services that are enabled over the Internet, including extra cloud storage with OneDrive and Skype minutes for home use. With Office 365 you get the full, installed Office experience on PCs, Macs, tablets (including Windows, iPad, and Android) and smartphones. Office 365 plans are available as a monthly or annual subscription. With Office 365, upgrades are always included with your subscription.

Office 2016 suites, including Office Home & Student and Home & Business, include applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote; they are available as a one-time purchase for use on a single PC or Mac. The applications are not automatically updated; to get the latest version, you must purchase Office again when the new version becomes available.

Ratings and reviews

Rated 5 out of5 by from5 out of 5 - best mail client on MacEasily this is the best e-mail client on mac. I've used this since the early release beta (when crashes were more common) but since it's official release I've yet to see any major issues. This is the only e-mail client I ever recommend to friends, family and coworkers. It's freaking amazing.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromAwesome, I absolutely love it!I recently just switched over from years of using windows computers to my first macbook and everything with this software is almost exactly the same! I love it! It made the transition that much easier and I am very pleased. I don't understand what all the fuss is about and why people don't like it. I think it's great. I've already written two papers and they came out wonderful.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromWorks very wellI have been using MS Office for Mac version 15.x (2016) for a couple of months now and staying up with the frequent updates. I like it much more than the 2011 version and of course the native Mail and work suite. Been quite stable for me as well.(One bug -- it defaults to the top message in each folder every time you leave and re-enter the folder; it should stay at the last message viewed.)Overall, recommended for folks needing this in an Enterprise setting.

Rated 5 out of5 by fromNice Upgrade!I was happy to see this upgrade! After using the latest Office for Windows, I was excited to be happy to have some of the same features on my Mac. I love what Microsoft is doing to continue to improve their products and even happier that Microsoft has adopted more of a platform independent approach to their software products! Now, please bring Project and Visio to the Mac!

Rated 1 out of5 by fromMicrosoft Goes Old SchoolRemember back in the day when you had to manually save your MS Office files every 30 seconds to avoid losing data when the software inevitably crashed every couple minutes for no apparent reason? Microsoft has brought back this amazing feature with Office 2016, which guarantees at least one crash per session. It seems that Microsoft wants their new Office product to be more like Google Docs, except extremely unstable and prone to data loss. They've disabled the feature in Excel where you can type "=" and then click a series of cells to have them add up. Now you have to type "=" then click your first cell, then "+" then your second cell, and so on. They've also taken the liberty of hiding the most commonly used features so that you have to use Google search to figure out how to do what you want (the Help included in the app on on Microsoft's web site is useless).I had Office 2011 before this. It was simple, elegant, and extremely stable. I can't remember the last time it crashed. Unfortunately, when I "upgraded" to El Capitan, it stopped opening PowerPoint files, so I had to replace it despite the reviews. Now in one day of using Office 2016, Office apps have crashed over a dozen times. The final word: If you can avoid using Office 2016, do so. Based on the collective experience of my office, we are now encouraging all employees to use Google Docs/Sheets whenever reasonably possible in order to avoid data loss and file corruption that seem to be bundled into Office 2016.
