FAQs

Q: What sensors does Microsoft Band 2 have?

A: Microsoft Band 2 has sensors that help you track info about your activity level, UV exposure, location, heart rate, elevation, and more.

Continuous heart rate monitor
Your Microsoft Band 2 continuously monitors your heart rate during the day. See Track your heart rate for more info.

Accelerometer/Gyrometer
The accelerometer/gyrometer in your band detects motion. This info is used to calculate things like number of steps taken. For info on tracking these measurements, see track your calories burned, track your exercise, track your steps, and track your sleep.

GPS
When you turn GPS on during distance travel activities like running, or biking, it records your route, and collects info about the distance you’ve traveled. Sync your band with your phone, and you’ll find a map of your route in the Microsoft Health app. Use the Run Tile to start and stop GPS tracking for running, and the Bike tile when you ride. See using GPS mapping for more information.

Microphone
Use the built-in microphone to speak to Cortana, your personal digital assistant (available only on Windows Phone 8.1 update or later). The microphone is near the left side of the touchscreen. When Cortana’s enabled on your phone and band, just press and hold the action button then speak into the mic. See using Cortana for more info.

Ambient Light Sensor
Info from the ambient light sensor can be used to adjust the brightness of your touchscreen display automatically.

Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) sensors
The GSR sensor measures the conductivity of your skin between the GSR sensor under the clasp and the secondary GSR contact point under the face of your Microsoft Band 2. This tells your Microsoft Band 2 whether you’re wearing it, so it can adjust how it monitors your activities.

UV Monitor
Get a snapshot of the current UV level by tapping the UV Tile.

Barometer
Track your fitness with more precision with a built-in barometer that measures elevation changes while running, biking, or just climbing stairs.

Q: What is auto sleep tracking?

A: You can use Microsoft Band 2 to track how much and how well you’re sleeping.

Microsoft Band 2 tracks the length and quality of your sleep using biometric data like heart rate and motion. The Microsoft Health app and your Microsoft Health web dashboard use data collected by the band to calculate and help you analyze your sleep quality.

Q: What are Guided Workouts, and how do I know which is right for me?

A: Guided Workouts are workout routines you download to your Microsoft Band 2. Your band will tell you what exercise to do, and can track your reps and calories burned. They keep your workouts fresh and challenging with targeted workout plans designed by top fitness brands.

Choose a Guided Workout plan based on your fitness goals. Select the difficulty level, duration, and the focus area that’s right for you, and get a summary of your effort and progress.

Guided Workout videos show you how to do your exercises for maximum fitness benefit.

Ratings and reviews

Rated 5 out of5 by fromExcellent piece of equipmentI bought it for the sleep track mode however it has helped me in other facets, calories burned, exercise and more. I love the notices it gives me for when I am at work such as messages from my phone--one can view them discretely, without having my phone in hand. A very useful product that I keep finding new usages for it.

Rated 2 out of5 by fromNot Sturdy Enough For Everyday WearBand came apart on the joints on both sides after 2 months of use. For a product that claims sleep tracking and daily functions one would assume this was built to last, you'd be wrong. Easily replaced within warranty but now I'm without my band for 2 weeks.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromGreat for reminding me how little sleep I getLove the band, the fact that I can use it with any phone is a godsend. It overestimates my steps a bit, but all of the devices I researched tend to do that.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromAwesome! The wrist band broke they gave a new oneI love it. I use it mostly for tracking steps and for work out classes at the gym. It is a little bit bulky but not too bad. The notifications are great and I love that I can track the stock prices directly from the Band. The user interface is awesome and I love the animation for sleep mode. The notifications that tell you that you haven't been active are pretty funny. The one problem that I found was that after 4 or 5 months the rubber part of the wrist band cracked. I went to Microsoft Store and the replaced it right away without any hesitation.

Rated 1 out of5 by fromNot Comfortable to wearI used my Band 2 for about 5 months.I found that it is not comfortable when working on my computer (Laptop and Pro3).The buckle is too thick. The heart rate monitor is not accurate when doing aerobics. The battery life last one day.

Rated 4 out of5 by fromI'm very happy with itI'm not a gadget person whatsoever, but I've really come to love this thing. I had mentioned to my friend that I was going to buy a Fitbit, and he had the Band 2 - so he gave it to me to try. I really started wearing it expecting to hate it - but I honestly fell in love with it and can't go anywhere without it now. Lol. I don't think I use it to its full capacity, but having the ability to track my steps, heart rate, and caloric burn is very helpful and mostly what I use it for. Also, being able to see all the notifications from my phone on here is pretty incredible. No more phantom vibrating pockets - just flip my wrist to see what came through (or didn't).I would give this 5 stars, but the quality of the band (material) is just terrible. Buy the warranty. I'm about to be on my third one - thanks to the warranty - because the material does not hold up. The glass is great - although I have a screen protector on it - but the neoprene / rubber material is terrible. It never fails after a few months I end up ripping it somehow. The only other downside to it is the iPhone interface, which I am not at all impressed with. It's extremely limited, doesn't sync unless you force-sync it, and is pretty limited to what it seems like it does. Not a deal breaker, but not impressed.Other than those two things - this thing is awesome. I love being reminded of when I've been lazy too long, the UV exposure, and the step counter. It's really helped my weight loss journey significantly, and helped me to be more active. The Bluetooth connectivity range is incredible. I've never seen a device that has like a 75' Bluetooth range (no exaggeration). I can walk clear all around my office, my phone still on my desk, and still get my notifications just about anywhere I go.
